And did he ever even get to that part about 'helmet safety' and that the guy in the photo wasn't wearing one?

Oh, no, yet another topic for the echo factory to pretend that people care about and repeat over and over.

 this is a lot more

if you don't have proper fonts installed you won't see what this picture shows: the output of the echo command with unicode symbols as input. If you are blind basically the unicode are symbols that you could feel as shapes. If you have a 'font box', which would be like that divice with all the pins in it that you can place your hand inside, and the shape of your hand will appear on the surface. If such a thing locked, it would then let a blind person feel it and they would feel the shape. such a device that does that for font shapes would greatly aid the blind. It would be a 'kind of' high resolution new-braille. Call it a 'sean-box' font reader.

The Message Column

Final Concert.

Reports out of Birmingham, England, via BBC, indicate that Black Sabbath has played their last concert.

A great shout out from here to the band: Bravo! Thanks for the music!

The claim is that Black Sabbath invented the Heavy Metal genre. But that is always prefaced with 'some say', because who can really claim that? We could investigate who invented what, who first did what, what sounded 'heavy'. From my point of view, as a consumer of the music back in the day, the 'heavy' sound was from the distortion and the loudness of the band. It was something that wuold happen during pop music sometimes, and also in Jazz and Rock and Roll. What Black Sabbath did was to have the music be use melodious distorted guitar throughout the whole song, throughout the whole album. But basic traditonal forms of music were still present, like the Ballad, and the dirge. Who can deny the sweetness of a song like "Planet Caravan", just from how it sounds? Who can discount the angst driven lyrics of "Paranoid", and indeed, the whole Paranoid album?

An older kid told me that Black Sabbath was 'just noise'. I knew he'd never listened to it. Some people would put them down, because they didn't like the basic hum of the Heavy Metal genre. Some of the features: constant distortion and angst filled lyrics entwined with dissappointment at the absurdity of institutions and governance, and famous people. Also we have a movie theme quality stomp sound, like the tracks that would be used in a good monster movie in a song like Ironman. How do you explain such music to people who don't just inherently 'get it'? Probably by saying 'listen'. Somethings in pop music are just sound, and there isn't really supposed to be some hard message glued into it. And even when the message ought to be clear to clever people, such as in a song like 'Suicide Solution', the lyrics to which caused the band and the liricist a lot of grief, some cleaver lawyer trying to claim that this poetry baited a young person into suicide and sued the band for damages . . . Look it up, it was a real case. The suicide solution? Well, in poetry phrases and fragments of lyric don't just have one partiuclar hard and necessary meaning. The solution, the lawyers explained, was the solution of water and alcohol that someone uses to drink-to-death. OK, so there you go. Case dismissed. It's poetry. It's lyric. It's supposed to make you think. It is not a pretty world in which we live. In the 1970's we faced the prospect of nuclear war as a constant hum of possible conclusion to all the insanity of that time. And thus nihilism in young people did thrive. Unfortunately most of the best outgoing natural poets did get swallowed up into dissipation of some various sort. Diving after fame they never came back up, some of them. Some of them drove the world away so far that when they were discovered . . . gone . . . they were partly mumified already, like the art work from a Grateful Dead album cover only far more gruesome. We all cheered ra! ra! ra! when the "In the Dark" single was released as a music video. It was the Grateful Dead dancing as skeleton puppets in a mock up concert, and in tribute to their album cover artwork of skeletons and roses. How do you explain that kind of iconography? How do you explain 'War Pigs'?

It is to be interpreted and enjoyed. Demanding a political or social explanation? Shut up and enjoy the music.

"But I don't like what they are talking about." Then try to hear it just as sound.

Changing the subject, but not too far off, I've maintained as a snot-headed talking point when doing the whole rock-n-roll banter (at various boasting points) that some of the Frank Zappa songs were much better if you did not understand what the lyrics meant. Also, that some songs are indicative of personality characteristics of the listener. They are kind of 'got the message, hang up the phone' sorts of songs, hear it once and you never need to hear it again. They songs are an artistic prank, in one sense, like the sound track of someone performing a sex act that was billed as a song on an album by . . . who is in the news today for dropping some new tracks and dissing . . . as is his usual method of blossoming (his art are his blossoms).

In music no good band is ever through, no matter how old they get. Musicians are usually able to keep it up the jams even into old age. So that begs the question: is the final Birmingham show for Black Sabbath really their last concert ever?

Like with The Who, who keep doing 'last tours'. or Aerosmith. We all know that they can always do a popup concert. If they want to.

H1B changes?

   In essence of form?
a Buddha statue of that man, doesn't suit him.
They dress him in their own hard stone
and try to steal his brilliance from the world
and to bully in a world of their own hegemony,
the divided country behind them as a cleaved stone mountain,
a crass attempt to destroy the symbols of the great man's oration.
A Buddha statue of that man, doesn't suit him.
He is dress in their indignation
from their lack of understanding
of what he really meant
when he meant what he said.

And he did mean it.

You have to undress him then,
and see him as naked and afraid
and understand that he was actually a man.
not a chess piece monolith.

So if you make chess-piece monoliths,
and put them in a park,
chess pieces are made to be moved.
Parks can be used to model the backdrop
of videogame levels . . .
where the stones and statues
can often be rolled or moved somehow
to perhaps solve a puzzle.

So roll that stone backwards
and fill in the gap
and make that monolith less loathsome.

In essence of form? what does that mean anyway?

Political and Media Inanity

Kafka wrote comedy. Orwell was a pessimist. Depends who you ask.

Imagine if they both could have lived and made it to Los Angeles, post war, and been collaborators on writing romantic screwball comedies for Hollywood. If we search IMDB for movies written by Kafka, or by Orwell, will we find one? I kind of doubt it.

Trump-zilla

The kaiju (strange creature) who the protestors imagine

Two weeks in and the mantra of the old-order is 'become ungovernable'. Their non-impressive temper tantrums display their addiction and flurtation with dangerous delusion. They created an evil characteture of a man, presented it to the public during the election, utilizing all of their tactics of operant conditioning, and modern advertising, and they convinced themselves of their own lies. So now they do battle with an imginary president, meanwhile neighsaying everything that the President does and says.

As an Independant, and an observer of politics, I did cross over to being a Trump Supporter in June of 2015 when he first announced. Why? For the same reasons that some one routes for Sampson (from the Bible).

We are generations and generatoins later. We've learned from these sacred texts how not to behave. So have no fear, ye fearful, I doubt Mr. Trump is going to be pulling down your temple. But think of the simbology of it all: Sampson was given the means to do it by being bound to the temple. Sad for Sampson he killed himself in the process. We don't want that to happen to anyone, really.

If you listen to the narratives that come from the activast left (some of the left leaning politically minded people) you would think that they believe that everythign that anyone from their faction has ever done is virtue and good will and that it all has to keep marching onward to progress in the way that they want it to progress, and no one can stop them just because . . . They deny the obvious nature of political opportunism. Fortunately there are rational leftists who reject that whole line of rethoric, and understand where the snakes have crawled in, and are nesting.

No one supports rioting. It's not a statement. Better stop with the retrograde messaging as displayed on the Berkeley marchers giganitic banner calling for ungovernableness. Ah, but always the victims. Robert Reich points out (and this is crazy) that he believes that . . . started the riots because . . .

OK, Mr. Riech, then why the banner? Isn't it far more likely that the rioters were a little closer to your happy fully-funded Berekely home than you are admitting? If you could do a geniology of all the 'rioters' what would you find? To which professors would they be releated?

When I see the best that they got smack talking full of delusions, I see him suddenly as the grubby little carpet bagger that he seemed to be when he was running for governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. That whole class: the spokes puppets for the failed cause of INternationalist Socialism. They simply can't close down the borders becase how else will they be able to freely send their solans off to all the far corners of the globe so that they can carry out the multi-generational mission of burning down all the business and industry that doesn't belong to their clan, cartel, or moieties.

But that sounds delusional too? Could there really be a multi-generational conspiracy that has just been unmasked so that some of us see it and understand what they tried to do (in our own feeble way of comprehending). But, like all the plans of demons and devils, it all can be just seen as delusive. And anyone could say 'you've gone too far in your rethoric, you have no way to prove any of this.'

OK, that is my excuse. I know that my delusional explanation for the putrid nature of some of the rethoric from people like Robert Reich is mostly a fiction. And that I have no way to really understand the clans of various political factions, or if they are or are not multi-generational moieties of political opportunists bent on domination of false cause liberalism for the ultimate domination of some particular clan, tribe, or moiety, I know my story is a fiction. I tell you that right now: I make it up as I go along. I am basically a novelist at heart, and a fiction writer as a compulsion. That's my excuse for being outragious with what might seem to be accusations about politics. So what is the excuse of the riot appologists?

tell us how you really feel . . .

kaiju : strange creature
kaijin : strange creatures

Both Mothra and Godzilla were kaijin.

Give us back our egg.

The demcracy twins say:
"give us back our democracy."

the usurpers say:
"how dare you usurp our usurpation!"

some one shouts:
"Liberty does not wear a veil"

The giant statue starts lumbering, like
a huge Olmec Head chess piece,
or giant Gallapagous sculpture,
animated,
across the scene.

Maybe you should not drink
the protest kwel-aide

"but it tastes so good!" they cry.

Gathering together is holy effort.
A protest? It is always part that,
but the other part?
Do you have a point and something to say?
If not then shutt it up till you do.

And old proverb (I believe it's listed as being Chinese,
Those who say do not know. Those who know do not say.

I say I don't know,
but I do know what I don't say.
And I try to say what I might know,
but as a form of entertainment,
and a way for me to channel out my urges.
In that sense a blog, a speculative
writing project, like this one,
is a conjecture factory of snark and
possiblity hopefully
to open up the gates that
block the water from getting to
the thirsty minds,
starving for acceptance and
affection
within the scrum.
And the protestor megaphone guy
has them all chantting nonsense.
But at least it's warm
all huddled together in the rain
even if they don't know what the cause is.
Its a free bus ride.
It's a meal.
It's some pretty colored drink.
Drink up.

Hell no, we don't know
we are here and we won't go.

Jingo sings the jingo dove
the road to hell is paved with love

Megaphone jones
and his false cause indignation
makes them all feel so loved.

There is nothing heroic
in chanting along
with an idiot.

the false cause chorus
is so much fun
I'm in love
with every one
and I don't care what they say
I go along for the ride
anyway.
If it's free
it's me
I'm who I am
not who I be.

Imaginary evil can not be solved.

If you are crafting some kind of explanation of events, you tend to craft what some call 'conspiracy theory' and others 'speculative alternative conjecture', or just 'conjecture'. We conjecture but some take that, and through boasting, and the urge for false vallour, they 'run with it' (talk as if they know it's true, when they don't know that.). So the go on with a presentation of fraudulent message. It's fraudulent because it's mostly OK, like it makes sense. But the conclusions didn't happen through deductive reasoning, and the rules of logic didn't get used. The argument may have many flaws, and the person, perhaps at the boasting place, goes on and on with parts that are false. If you tell them, and prove to them, with evidence, the false nature of some of their premises, or the nonsequotor nature of it, you might recieve a curious reaction. A curious reaction?

Curious reaction

Some people when confronted with the spuriousness of their arguments, and the falsity of their premises, and the utter delusion of the conclusions; when confronted with the fragality of the authorities from which they took their sources, the false nature of the narrative that eminates from some localles; some people will run wtih the false narrative anyway. Is that because of pride? Others, they'll just feel the fool a second or two. "I got fooled again." they might think. And then maybe they will want to hear more of what you have to say. However, the first kind, who runs with it, you might want to change the topic now. Move away from politics.

Since imaginary evil cannot be solved, dare not speak of it much, it's better to realize that it's all of your imagination, and that is all you can ever really say it is, or a 'writing project'. Becuase we can not ever give someone a molded piece of pudding, and then tell them "Here, now, make this your whole world." False-cause false-charity is just like that: a molded piece of something that, while it's pretty and all, it ignores the reality of the world, and the necessary things that people need to replace it with a fable quality narrative about the world that draws cartoon cause people and then animates them in battle. But the authors of such animations often like to see it acted out on the street, and they hope to 'effect change' for the 'betterment' of . . . and you never really get a clear agenda, but just a lot of indignation if you start mentioning facts that they don't want to hear, or disagree with the most deeply rooted false-cause agenda that they worship as a life-cause. They are actually quite sad, after all , aren't they? And thank God that they don't really exist and that no one is really like that. But they are like the square-root of negative one. Even though they are imaginary, the use of the concept helps us to understand the way that things work in the real world. The real world, in this case, referes to the psychology of the fully hypnotized young-mind who is chanting along with the mega-phone guy who is paid to be there.

Somethings never change
nothing need stay the same
ah, but on a website
the constant change
 is kind-of the point . . .

change without continuity and tradition is often very hard to manage for those thrust into it. And thus the frame of things gives a place for the change to happen. If you violate that idea then you are coming up with something completely different and maybe no one will want to see your new idea, or use your great, new venue, because it's too far out, and very far away from what they currently care about. It's a nether or a meta and it's merely for a lark? Or does it become the next big thing? As fun as graphics are (CGI) and animation, and making a world to fly around in (like minetest, which is easy when you learn how) ultimately such a meta is a hollow place. It's a distraction during the season of gaming. It allows one to brush up on geometry and math, and architectural design, it gives people training in computer languages, it allows someone to make some graphical ideas, and pass a few hours of time every few days or so . . .

To live within such a realm really isn't possible.

Poem Shards

just who reads, who writes these poems?
off a mountain road the poet roams
but only in a poem.

Realizing that the empty
is empty
and not needing anything there.

just who shows up and for what?
I'm lonely or am alone or what does it matter?
driving off towards the nothing
walking along the nowhere path
up high
sure, it's a pretty view
but seen it, done it, jaded, back to the air port
he flew
his fantasy of happy vacation was through.

The deep snow.

The deep snow. She doesn't know how deep. She didn't think about it. Depth of snow no one know in rills and hollows where you shouldn't go when the storm is fierce and the night is cold even you shouldn't be so bold. poem is from 2012 short story titled Blizzard Baby The morning light is hued in cold awareness. Warming in the sun the bunny explores the snow covered lawn. The tracks melt by mid morning. Bunny doesn't know what the song means, anyway. This giant bubble that we call awareness? Coders Edge

served to you by:

Fedora 40

After 40 different versions what can one say about it anymore? It's installed in all my systems, a day earlier. There are a few minor issues, but no show stoppers.

I did some stuff with lvm to resize a root area. That took a very long time. It's on a machine that maybe just should be retired . . .

Fedora Core 38 beta

Ya, I decided to load Fedora Core 38 Beta about a month ago, and this machine kept shutting down . . . I think I finally fixed it. Tomorrow is the big release day for the Fedora Core 38. My production workstation is still running FC37. I don't know if I'll jump right on it right away. . .

my server is still resetting, or maybe I have it fixed. I decided to just remove plasma-desktop, as I don't use it. The journals were giving all kinds of errors with that, and I think that might have been the issue, conflicting with the gdm that I do use. Worst case I'd just go to runlevel 3 but, as I said in another column, I don't really even know if anyone views these pages anyway.

My production box would upgrade but the dnf says it would downgrade grum and associated tools, and that's never a good thing to do. I'm just not going to do it! anyway I'll check tomorrow when the offical release is and probably do it then. If I'm in the mood.

So now I've run every version of Fedora serving this website! that's a long time.

here is from a year ago:

Fedora Core 36 beta

It took some time to figure out how to defeat the new screensaver built in, but I was able to. It's the biggest downside to the new Gnome.

I set the keybindings to something I don't use, and then put in a custom keybinding to use the old tool.

There are other minor things that annoy too, like the restoration of a deleted file that I always have to delete again on every FC core upgrade. The file is name camera-shutte.oga. It's in /usr/share/sounds/freedesktop/stereo

At the precipice of coding.

a mountain trail often has a place with a great view and a perilous fall if you wonder just a bit too far to one side of the trail. It's called a precipice. It's not a scary place. It's a safe place that one passes through.

OK, so I've done an update to FC34.

the biggest issue was . . . . drum roll . . .a lock up of gnome.

and if i clicked on the activities button I would need to reload (log out log back in).

I was able to run stuff without that, and thus determined a list of files that might need to be removed. I did as full reinstall of gnome as such:

dnf reinstall gnome

then I did a

dnf list installed |grep fc33

which gave me a list of files to consider uninstalling.

from that I got the following:

first odd issue:

sudo was not at first working! I had to install it! I kept the configuration file so I have my preferences still set up.

dnf install sudo dnf reinstall gnome-* dnf reinstall kde* dnf reinstall NetworkManager* dnf remove gnome-screensaver dnf remove gnome-shell-extension-desktop-icons-20.04.0-2.fc33.noarch dnf remove xorg-x11-xkb-extras-7.7-33.fc33.x86_64 dnf remove compat-openssl10-1:1.0.2o-11.fc33.x86_64 dnf remove mozjs60-60.9.0-7.fc33.x86_64

there are still some fc33 packages, (I also looked for fc32 packages, anything older that was gnome)

sudo dnf list installed |grep fc33
biber.noarch 2.14-4.fc33 @fedora
gamin.x86_64 0.1.10-37.fc33 @fedora
libgta.x86_64 1.0.9-5.fc33 @fedora

if removing a package also removed large numbers of other packages, I left it. For each of the few that I did remove, I always would make sure by reading what would happen before agreeing to the transaction.

now the gnome-shell is working and it doesn't lock up. So which of the packages that I removed made the difference? I am not sure.

and so after just a few short hours of install, I've got my system working in away that seems normal.

the new gnome shell moves the icons to the bottom of the screen.

I find gnome-shell to be annoyingly poppy at times. I tend to do things rapidly, and all the popping can be nauseating.

It is helpful to learn how to use dnf. I've found that the reverse history stuff works as long as you haven't made too many changes. It's a dicey, though, to try and go back to an older revision but I did it ONCE. Next time it didn't work out so well. AT that point it was installing dnf and yum from rpms.

and I had success. It's the kind of thing that when you know how to do it . . .

but there was one other trick that I needed and it was a scary way to reset a password and I did discover how to do it. I'm not sharing that one (barely remember) it's like these things exist in a nether, and it's best to . . . let the knowledge fade unless you need it. It's too scary to dwell in that space.

anyway, gnome shell is working. It's not flighty and hanging up. And all it took was to remove the old packages of gnome that might conflict with it. And now I can continue with my review.
