Coders Edge

From Pattern to Process

installation failure recovery from too many dependencies.

It is very useful to have sed and awk in your tool kit. I find it useful to use the -printf functionality of the find command

Instead of trying to use an -exec flag, which will work for simple things, it's often better to do things by outputing into a file, chmod-ing that to be a script, and then executing the script. You can also cut and paste output into a bash shell, but I find that with very large arrays of code, the buffers don't always act reliably and not every line of code gets executed.

I've found some very powerful idioms in bash that make it so pretty much anything can get executed that one would want, to be able to pretty much create a command and make it run except . . . well, the machine doesn't let you do everything. That 's a good thing. I love the security of process monitors that exist in the background. The logic of it is marvelous.

So bash is powerful. And it can do a lot for you.
