Snow Weather.

We had a few inches of snow followed by a lousey rain storm that is flooding the roads. I went out to a movie for 9:40. Only that was the time that the movie started last night. So I get up there thinking, "oh how smart am I? I can miss most of the previews, which I hate." But when I go to get to the theater, the guy tells me that I can't go in now because the movie is just getting out. I had to go to the kiosk and see that the time for the movie was 10:30. It was 9:40. Bummer. With all that time to kill I just went home.

I didn't go straight home, but considered a junk-food run. But I didn't crave it, was better without it. At home I snagged some left-over Christmas candies and scarffed those. Then I headed back up to the cinema.

Though the streets were filled with water and clumps of slushy snow, I had no problem navigating back to the Cinema. I got a place right up front.

Yes, it's me, I'm the wierdo in the cinema who blocks his ears during the previews. I can't stand it. Previews are this fast paced strobe-lighting of the audience with bad ideas, which seem to fester from the brain-fart factories of either LA or London. Or maybe Tokyo, or Shanghai, or perhaps Kualla-Lampur. In any case the least amount of talent goes into previews. It's a genre that was devised by the early advertisers and it serves them well. They pound their message and they really want to the public to capitulate to. I use verb forms that English teachers may frown upon. I don't care. The fact is that a movie is a work of art. A preview is a work of adertisement for such art. the preview is always a hammer. Even when the movie is a daisy.

So it was Reese out there in the wilderness being fearful and over-packed. She is a wild child annealed by the sorrows of sudden on-set sadness, based upon a memoir about a woman who overcame jonesing for drugs and sex to face the ruins of her life, and how retrograde she had become trying to hide from the pain, burning her first husband.

The movie was also about how a woman alone is always faced with the idea that some men are rotten. The portrayal of a woman afraid really showed the emotion of paranoia in a way that will aid those insensitive to the plight of women who have PTSD due to trauma from being violated.

When you understand the fear that some people have it helps to allow for a kinder approach to women who are overcome with unreasonable fear, as if each large or jumbo man is after her affections, or will try to just take them from her. The story is one of fear of being violated with approach. There is nothing more she needs to do than come to the end of her sojourn through the mountains of California and Oregon. When she gets to the end there is a fox that was dogging her the whole way (as if it's the same fox) and she stands on a bridge that would be good for someone who was looking for a shorter journey, down a thousand feet into a river and death. The fox is there. She's arrived. She tells of her future that she is going to have in 'voice over' narrative. We've got to see the horible cancer-death of her mom, and how shamed she felt for having to do some things to follow through with her mom's request for the maximum kindness for her horse. It's a sad horse story and we get the sad cancer story and I hate a cancer story at Christmas. I hate a cancer story all the way, I just can't deal with it, it's not my genre of story.

But we never like that kind of story. It's not a story to like. It's a story to live through, to learn from. A hard story? Worth hearing. Worth hearing for it's authenticity.

So, it's a story of redemption. And you can't have that without some kind of a hard fall. And the only way to have that is to have real tradgedy in your life, either some great calamity from the wider world, or some grand moral failing of your own (of the character of the story's own).

After she's gone so far, we don't really expect that she's going to jump from the bridge. She doesn't.

I recommend this movie if you enjoy a story about someone who overcomes a great emotional struggle. Even though it has the horrible disease story as part of it, It's good enough to over come that. that part isn't just put in the story as some kind of social service for cancer awareness, or to scare people into getting checkups. It's a necessary part of the story.

There is some more to the movie, too, some parts that are nostolgic, with the death of Jerry in 1995. Sad time.

Years ago I would have been all depressed. I can see the grand swath of New Year's Eve past. "I am the ghost of January 14th's past" "How did you get that job?" "No, it's cool. Every year we get a different random day. I only have to do this gig four or five times a year." "He says he's the ghost of Christmas past, but aren't you really the Ghost of May twelfths to come?"
