Mike Love and his band will perform at the Esplanade in Boston for the July 4th Pop's Concert this year. What a nice surprise!

The Beach Boys are an inspriational band who were very famous very fast. They have a virtuoso composer as one of the members. But he doesn't play out with them that often. The story why is deep and meaningful. If you don't know the details of it, then just realize that they are a family business, so . . . if you think there are 'sides', well, you've been reading too many tabloids.

Think about great band leaders. Name one who has kept a band relevant and performing for over 50 years? Then we get to Mike Love because that is what he did. So even though he gets some people upset because they don't understannd that the show must go on, and Mike keeps it going on, then they do what they want by posting stupid comentary about what they imagine his relationship is with the other members of the band . . . fact is that we, as their adoring (and sometimes not so much) public can only imagine based upon what they allow us to see of them in public. If we really look at the story we see that this is a family that was willing to have an open discussion about one of their members who was suffering from demons! And they let the world see in as a way to say 'yes, we can get a cure for this. we might have demons popping up in the pudding of our lives, but we can be cured of it.' See how compelling the story. So we have the answered prayer of a man getting his sanity back to where he can be comfortible doing his work and exploiting his God given talent. And we have the story of the dutiful family who kept the family band out there playing and keeping the party going so that they could help to finance the cure that they were hoping would come for their band-mate, composer, and beloved family member. So the only villians are imaginary at this point. It's all good. Everyone is as they should be.

Well, I'd watched a two hour documentary about Brian Wilson presents Smile. So if you want an inside look at Mr. Wilson's struggles with coping, watch it. I say God Bless him for letting it be so public. There are very many people who get troubled over matters that many around them can not comprehend. Society says 'Oh, that person' and then seems to point at them. We call it illness. But we can get past it. We can over come it. We can survive. And we do. We have. We will. What we call 'mental illness', a very real affliction, can be managed, handled, and conquored. People can still shine with their brillient talents. It isn't a check-in no-check-out type of affliction for everyone.

So it was a surprise to me when I read that The Beach Boys in their touring configuration (without Mr. Wilson) will be joining the celebration in Boston this year. I think I may venture over in that direction for at least one of the shows.

The show that The Boston Pops does every year is one of Boston's biggest parties. It is not trivial to get over there on that day. I've been thruogh the park a billion times. It's exceptionally accessible, and very much a great place to take a jaunt. But on that day it will be a security zone so . . . so a trip there for the event needs to be planned out.

When Aerosmith played in Alston in November a few years back it was easy to wonder over and catch the show. I was one of the older fans there. It was mostly college kids. For the Esplanade show I wouldn't be surprised if Stephan Tylar or James Taylor or other famous accessible Bostonians will be there. Who know who might be there. Because the show is a neighborhood show. If you live in Boston it's not hard to get there. If you are from out of town there are a lot of logistics to just showing up for the show. Of course we all know now about these things. Clear bags only. All of that. But seriously: easy to get to and it should be a good show (actually there will be two shows!). It will also be webcast.
