And did he ever even get to that part about 'helmet safety' and that the guy in the photo wasn't wearing one?

Oh, no, yet another topic for the echo factory to pretend that people care about and repeat over and over.

 this is a lot more
             fun
         than wading

if you don't have proper fonts installed you won't see what this picture shows: the output of the echo command with unicode symbols as input. If you are blind basically the unicode are symbols that you could feel as shapes. If you have a 'font box', which would be like that divice with all the pins in it that you can place your hand inside, and the shape of your hand will appear on the surface. If such a thing locked, it would then let a blind person feel it and they would feel the shape. such a device that does that for font shapes would greatly aid the blind. It would be a 'kind of' high resolution new-braille. Call it a 'sean-box' font reader.

The coming Reformation

of the managers

April 16, 2014

We don't want animal cruelty, but it's OK for BLM contractors to run helicopters after cattle on an open range? We don't want extinct tortoises, but it's OK to euthanize (kill) the extras because you don't have the budget to support them? So if there wasn't budget to support the tortoises, then where did the budget come from for the helicopters and cattle round up? Or the budget to bring in the squads from out of state that terrorized people who were finally fed up and beyond belief?

They were saying things like they were ready to die.

Well, is that brave? Or is it just being bold? I want to say you don't need to die!

I hope that everyone is ready in once sense to die. But we don't need to die like that. If there were some kind of firefight over cows . . . and there were a lot of people brought to hospitals, blood all over the road, it would have all been on cameras. Do the Bundy people really believe that the BLM out-o-staters were going to lock and load on them? Seems like the Bundy supporters do.

Do those Nevada ranchers really think that Harry Reid is that magic that he can suspend basic rules of government: you don't kill your own people over fees not paid.

Mr. Bundy needs to pay the fees or put them into a receivership because that is the rule of law. Which must be obeyed. But maybe the fees would just about cover the cost of the repairs that he will need to make now on the land which is said that BLM destoryed?

BLM squad should not be training guns on people assembling on public land. It seems very plausible that the people brought to Gold Butte for this incident are just as disgusted with Harry Reid as everyone else is. And the reason that no one pulled a trigger? would you have in this situation? Totally unwarrented. It's a case of unpaid fees!

It cowardly to shoot people over something as banal as un-paid fees. Those fees that are possibly usurped by the managers for their pet causes.

From administration to administration various pushes get pushed by the manager d'jour appointments of new people in Washington. At one point a new administration suddenly came up with the idea of the people who owned the water rights to lease the grazing rights. Well, without wter there is nothing to graze. So the ranchers were then forced into a leases for these grazing rights, which were invented by BLM.

The Bundy's claim this as a form of taxation wtihout representation.

Last week, a tense standoff

The standoff that occured last week was a big deal to a lot of people. It really shouldn't have gone as far as it did. It seemed to many as an over reach by elements with in the Federal Beaurocracy. The rest of the Beaurcracy must realize that we all understand how out of control people can become, drunk with power. Don't you have a duty to reign these people in? How embarrassing for all involved to have a face off about something as banal as an unpaid fee.

The only violence on lands managed by BLM was a guy being killed for tresspass. If they don't own the land then how was the bicyclist tresspassing? How can a citizen ever be tresspassing on public land?

Am I not supposed to ask this question? Of course we all have a duty to try and improve process. In this case I am very far removed from it but I can see it from the distance and say "it's obvious that BLM needs a total reformation"

So, well, we had a situation. And is anyone on the left thinking that this is the final showdown? They want to tell the squatters (this is how I imagine if someone were really thinking like this that they would think, but hopefully no one really does) to get off of the people's land? But which people's land?

It seems that the BLM lifers need to start thinking about it a little differently. They need to deprecate the phraseology 'BLM lands' to be 'Lands that BLM manages'. BLM owns no land. This is how the Bundy's seem to think, and frankly it makes sense to me too.

Because it makes sense to me that BLM should stop saying that they own the land, I would deprecate as a phrase from the lexicon “BLM lands”. BLM owns no land but merely manages it. Replace all instances of the phrase “BLM lands” with “lands under BLM management.”

Which gets to the next point about the reorganization of BLM that will now be necessary now that we see so clearly, like mountains against a dessert sky at sunset, the corruption that is possible at BLM.

Mr. Reid has a clearly tortured soul. He has subhumated his rivals to the point of dehumanizing them in his mind. To say that 'this isn't over', well,to put it in old-movie dialect “them's fightin' words”.

Mr. Reid wants a fight, it seems.

But blood doesn't make for happy elections. and blood is really hard to clean off. Ask Lady McBeth, whom Harry Reid seems to kind of resemble ( a cheep shot).

Even Democrats will be loath to support Harry's Greed. And the Mojave, who he must count as his friends, probably wouldn't be so happy to share a shovel with Harry the next time they break ground on a billion dollar solar bon-doggle, especially if there is blood on the ground.

Well, let's hope that this season instills in all of these folks a sense of reason. They need to stand down from their “We're ready to die” stance. And Harry Reid, you need to stand down from your office at the Senate. You need to go away and not come back to Washington. I hear that Kentucky is nice. If you keep up with what seems like an organized conspiracy (racketeering) and people end up dead, who do you think that prosecutors of the next government are going to blame for this? The corrupt regime of this current crop will not last and those who have caused great harm will be brought to account. Honest prosecutors will administer justice.

Absolute Power, it is said, corrupts absolutely. Absolute corruption, it's a myth. There is still some kind of humanity left in Harry Reid. He needs to let it grow.

But if he doesn't, and he causes a blood bath, it will all be on his head. And Democrats will have a real lot of 'splanning to do, to the Mojave, to the Nevadans, to the rest of the people in the United States, and to the world.

So cut out this ridiculous vendetta against the Bundy's. Get over it. Everyone is on to the greed-trail that you left. Everyone can see how ridiculous it is to say that because of a tortoise some people should loose their livelihoods, a tortoise said to be endangered but that must not be because BLM has euthenized (killed) very many of them of their own admission.

And the BLM also is said to have dug up and removed various aspects of Mr. Bundy's infrastructure. He has legal rights to water in the area and BLM people are said to have ripped up his water works!

Now let me ask all of my ACLU friends about this, if someone did this in, say, Bergen County, or in Brookline, would they possibly be charged with terrorism? But dessert terrorism is ok as long as a powerful senator stands behind the perpetrators? Environmentalism gone amuck is what it is. It is a covetousness for the rights to the water. Was there any kind of order saying that it was OK to destroy this critical infrastructure? Can the destruction of water works such as these result in charges of terrorism against BLM managers for ordering this?

Let's just all call it a wash, do a general amnesty, call it all even, leave the cattle to be and the Bundy's too. Let the Bundy's spend the fine money rebuilding the water works. And the BLM managers can spare themselves the embarrassment of being handed over to prosecutors on conspiracy to commit terrorist acts against the people (if it comes to that).

A friend of the state ought to be hard on the state.

The people who are ready to die should stop being ready. Instead be ready to forgive. Instead be ready to accept that maybe you've demonized poor Mr. Harry Reid. He's still human. He's not totally a demon. He could go to rehab for the power mad and be redeemed. He needs love too. He is not the Judas of this age like some seem to imply, and we should not wish that he just fall and die.

When someone goes to the edge, they look down. They want it. They want the finallity, they are done. Their shame is too complete.

But they can come back. They can accept the worlds forgiveness.

Harry Reid could come out of his fog and accept that no amount of graft is worth murdering people for their water rights, which is what the world will say if bad things happen to the Bundy's (by the world, I of course don't mean everyone, but that will become the general consensus.).

Midnight Raid?

Pray that there is not

April 15, 2014

Let's hope that the GS-lifers do the right thing which is not doing a 'midnight raid' on Gold Butte.

If it's only about not having paid a fee . . . which isn't even a tax . . . and is used to fund a vendetta against him . . . and a BLM head (less than a week into the job) saying the strategy is to bankrupt the Bundys . . . why such an over reaction by the government?

The Beauro of Land Management doesn't own any land at all according to the Bundys. In that sense the BLM has no land but only manages the land. So it is incorrect to say "BLM lands". Instead it should be "Lands under BLM management."

Let's hope that a newbee in the job doesn't make haste with injustice. If there is anything that happens to this family, who really have been put upon by the BLM. When an officer of the government says that his mission is to bankrupt a guy just for not paying a fee . . . is drunk with power and out of his mind. This person should be removed from office. These people at BLM better watch out, and Harry Reid too, because what they are doing is culluding to ruin a person's life because he won't capitulate. It might be that some will see that this the Reid Cabal might get put up on RICCO statutes for running a criminal conspiracy . . .

Clearly the way that BLM functions needs to be modified. To imagine that the 'whole government' is in on this . . . that is far fetched.

There is a very uneducated woman arguing that a midnight raid is OK because there was a judge who said that Bundy had to pay . . . I had to mute the television.

She said it's ok becase it was a George Bush appointed judge. Does she realize how vile she is, Tamara Holder? Do you even know the facts? The euthenized tortoises? That BLM was trying to do a 30 year grift. That they were planning on setting up a surveylence system in the desset to monitor their mitigation zone, which is why they covet Bundy's land? Clueless and very mean. Murder in the name of not paying a fee? How rediculous.

If they kill Cryspis Attics there is no telling what will happen next . . .

The Tortoise and Harry Reid

April 12, 2014

The story about Harry Reed and the BLM land seizures grew great big legs last night when a pdf from BLM hit the web like a brick falling onto the head of tyranny.

BLM had sent armed guys to scare away locals concerned with what many deemed to be an outragous abuse of power by BLM: the over enforcing laws and regulations, meanwhile letting other things go to rot. Claiming that Dessert Tortoises were so special that people's rights don't matter, meanwhile euthenizing (killing) very many of these so-called endangered tortoises. So maybe the bigest threat to these Dessert Tortoises is the BLM, who are supposed to be there to help it survive?

Well, shamefully, BLM sent out guys to act tough in the dessert and scare the locals away. Many of these guys were probably embarrassed to be there. What do you do when the current crop of politically appointed bosses are crazy? If you are a BLM lifer, you probably don't want to say 'no' to your bosses and compromise your position. A lifetime job at BLM must be sweet for some people. Politics changes. A BLM job is for life. You just have to hold out through the crazy times. This must be the point of view. There was one writer this week who was at the scene and talked to one of the BLM people. This person said that he didn't want to be part of what BLM was doing. He said that what he was doing would make his grandfather ashamed of him. (I can find the reference to this).

What happened is legand now. But try to find it at some web 'news' sites and the story doesn't exist.

The BLM plans for Gold Mesa, on which Rancher Bundy has always run his cattle, included an elaborate surveillance system for a 'mitigation zone'. All of this is outlined by the BLM in a pdf titled Regional Mitigation Strategy for the Dry Lake Solar Zone, Technical Note 444. Either this document is a clever form of misinformation and a forgery, or it is a scathing indictment of the BLM policies and procedures for protecting endangered species. Who will pay for this? It was to be paid for by a cut of the profits from the Dry Lake Solar Zone! So BLM was perfectly OK with ruining important habitats for endangered species as long as they got a 30 year pay off (thirty years was to be the length of the lease on the Dry Lake Solar Zone).

opinion:

Harry needs to stop treating BLM lands as his own. Endangered species should not be used as pawns that trump everyone else's rights. Endangered species should be left to be, and if there are other places for them too, then good. But to kill them one place to move them somewhere else, to land with rights stolen from otherwise law-following people, is a grave injustice.

If the Democrats want to remove a difficult campaign issue they ought to do a house cleaning at BLM. They should get Harry Reid to resign his office.

Emminent Harm

There still is a senator in DC
Who thinks it's OK that if he
  drive ranchers from their land
but when the public took a stand
The squad of job-for-lifers did flee

 ya, it needs work.

There once was an endangered reed
and BLM couldn't get anymore seed.
So they planned mitigation on Gold Butte
Even if it drive off ranchers, they didn't give a hoot
A scheme totally based upon greed.

ya, still not good.

Did you gossimer wings fry, Iccarus?

Hey you can spit out the apple
    but then you find yourself
naked climbing way high in the tree.

  how high do you climb?

just how high would that be?

If you eat that apple up high
you can hear the rain cloud clap
way way off in the far away sky.
 You could die!

  Hey you
   tree fort builder
what kind tree did you climb?
 What will the lightening do?

August Tomatoes

In the back yard!

It's August. People are harvasting their tomatoes. Other people don't have any tomatoes. The chipmunks will eat every single one while it's still very tiny. You need a fortified and fenced in garden.

Somethings never change
nothing need stay the same
ah, but on a website
the constant change
 is kind-of the point . . .

change without continuity and tradition is often very hard to manage for those thrust into it. And thus the frame of things gives a place for the change to happen. If you violate that idea then you are coming up with something completely different and maybe no one will want to see your new idea, or use your great, new venue, because it's too far out, and very far away from what they currently care about. It's a nether or a meta and it's merely for a lark? Or does it become the next big thing? As fun as graphics are (CGI) and animation, and making a world to fly around in (like minetest, which is easy when you learn how) ultimately such a meta is a hollow place. It's a distraction during the season of gaming. It allows one to brush up on geometry and math, and architectural design, it gives people training in computer languages, it allows someone to make some graphical ideas, and pass a few hours of time every few days or so . . .

To live within such a realm really isn't possible.

Poem Shards

just who reads, who writes these poems?
off a mountain road the poet roams
but only in a poem.

Realizing that the empty
is empty
and not needing anything there.

just who shows up and for what?
I'm lonely or am alone or what does it matter?
driving off towards the nothing
walking along the nowhere path
up high
sure, it's a pretty view
but seen it, done it, jaded, back to the air port
he flew
his fantasy of happy vacation was through.

Coders Edge

served to you by:

Fedora 40

After 40 different versions what can one say about it anymore? It's installed in all my systems, a day earlier. There are a few minor issues, but no show stoppers.

I did some stuff with lvm to resize a root area. That took a very long time. It's on a machine that maybe just should be retired . . .

Fedora Core 38 beta

Ya, I decided to load Fedora Core 38 Beta about a month ago, and this machine kept shutting down . . . I think I finally fixed it. Tomorrow is the big release day for the Fedora Core 38. My production workstation is still running FC37. I don't know if I'll jump right on it right away. . .

my server is still resetting, or maybe I have it fixed. I decided to just remove plasma-desktop, as I don't use it. The journals were giving all kinds of errors with that, and I think that might have been the issue, conflicting with the gdm that I do use. Worst case I'd just go to runlevel 3 but, as I said in another column, I don't really even know if anyone views these pages anyway.

My production box would upgrade but the dnf says it would downgrade grum and associated tools, and that's never a good thing to do. I'm just not going to do it! anyway I'll check tomorrow when the offical release is and probably do it then. If I'm in the mood.

So now I've run every version of Fedora serving this website! that's a long time.

here is from a year ago:

Fedora Core 36 beta

It took some time to figure out how to defeat the new screensaver built in, but I was able to. It's the biggest downside to the new Gnome.

I set the keybindings to something I don't use, and then put in a custom keybinding to use the old tool.

There are other minor things that annoy too, like the restoration of a deleted file that I always have to delete again on every FC core upgrade. The file is name camera-shutte.oga. It's in /usr/share/sounds/freedesktop/stereo

At the precipice of coding.

a mountain trail often has a place with a great view and a perilous fall if you wonder just a bit too far to one side of the trail. It's called a precipice. It's not a scary place. It's a safe place that one passes through.

OK, so I've done an update to FC34.

the biggest issue was . . . . drum roll . . .a lock up of gnome.

and if i clicked on the activities button I would need to reload (log out log back in).

I was able to run stuff without that, and thus determined a list of files that might need to be removed. I did as full reinstall of gnome as such:

dnf reinstall gnome

then I did a

dnf list installed |grep fc33

which gave me a list of files to consider uninstalling.

from that I got the following:

first odd issue:

sudo was not at first working! I had to install it! I kept the configuration file so I have my preferences still set up.

dnf install sudo dnf reinstall gnome-* dnf reinstall kde* dnf reinstall NetworkManager* dnf remove gnome-screensaver dnf remove gnome-shell-extension-desktop-icons-20.04.0-2.fc33.noarch dnf remove xorg-x11-xkb-extras-7.7-33.fc33.x86_64 dnf remove compat-openssl10-1:1.0.2o-11.fc33.x86_64 dnf remove mozjs60-60.9.0-7.fc33.x86_64

there are still some fc33 packages, (I also looked for fc32 packages, anything older that was gnome)

sudo dnf list installed |grep fc33
biber.noarch 2.14-4.fc33 @fedora
gamin.x86_64 0.1.10-37.fc33 @fedora
libgta.x86_64 1.0.9-5.fc33 @fedora

if removing a package also removed large numbers of other packages, I left it. For each of the few that I did remove, I always would make sure by reading what would happen before agreeing to the transaction.

now the gnome-shell is working and it doesn't lock up. So which of the packages that I removed made the difference? I am not sure.

and so after just a few short hours of install, I've got my system working in away that seems normal.

the new gnome shell moves the icons to the bottom of the screen.

I find gnome-shell to be annoyingly poppy at times. I tend to do things rapidly, and all the popping can be nauseating.

It is helpful to learn how to use dnf. I've found that the reverse history stuff works as long as you haven't made too many changes. It's a dicey, though, to try and go back to an older revision but I did it ONCE. Next time it didn't work out so well. AT that point it was installing dnf and yum from rpms.

and I had success. It's the kind of thing that when you know how to do it . . .

but there was one other trick that I needed and it was a scary way to reset a password and I did discover how to do it. I'm not sharing that one (barely remember) it's like these things exist in a nether, and it's best to . . . let the knowledge fade unless you need it. It's too scary to dwell in that space.

anyway, gnome shell is working. It's not flighty and hanging up. And all it took was to remove the old packages of gnome that might conflict with it. And now I can continue with my review.
