Rumi says that a compliment is just as damaging as an insult. He explains it well. The Qued-da-s are not fans of Rumi. I suspect that Mr. Putin has perhaps read a little bit about Rumi (but how would I know?). An intelligent and well-read person would read Rumi. Or not. And if you tell someone he is intellegent for reading it even dumb people will read Rumi.(a joke, no one is 'dumb' about everything, 'dumb people' is derisive) That is why the intelligence test never is. The person who rates another like that, not looking for the uniqueness of the individual but judging them on shallow things of fleeting importance, damages all of those involved. Some are told that they are dumb and they believe it. Some are told that they are 'exceptional' and they believe it.

To object to the idea of 'exceptionalism' as a term for use in polemics seems to be valid. Why? Because 'exceptional' is a very loaded word. 'Exceptional' is a boastful adjective. The use of it incorrectly, to apply to living people, perhaps does present a boast of sorts.

If we say "The process created a fullerine-carbon-fiber of both exceptionally small dimensions as well as exceptional strength." then we are not boasting. But if we say "The exceptional engineers, technicians, and scientists crafted a fiber of exceptional strength and thinness." we will be flagged by our writing teacher. And so, as a note, the term 'exceptional' should be reserved for things, dead people, or processes. Using the term 'exceptional' for living breathing people is a boast: it might just be a pale attempt at flattery. Flattery is bad. Self-flattery is even worse. Those who suffer delusions need to overcome them. Flattering the delusional doesn't help them.

As a point of Christian doctrine the idea of spiritual equality ranks high in importance. Love your neighbors as yourselves. Blessed are the peacemakers. These kinds of proverbs are very true but perhaps also misunderstood

And so, just a point, yes "God created us equal." but he did not make us congruent. Thus the tall person needs a longer bed. The heavy person needs a stronger chair. The person who live on the river learns to fish and live from the flow. The person who lives on the mountain has to learn how to shelter from the storm. The equality is in the love. Each person has different needs.

The Lord gave us freewill and Liberty. But we are supposed to know that our Liberty is there as well so we can help those who need it. And though we are 'free' we are slaves to The Lord. He makes us equals to each other, get up off your knees. We ought not bow to each other as vassals. Bow before The Lord, yes, but other than that. . . "

So cudos to Vladimir Putin for keeping it real and saying it in a way that people need to hear it. And I agree with the spirit of what he says.

When it comes to politics criticism is to be expected. The public person in the public eye ought to be a good example. The public likes to believe in the various office holders. Or at least know what kind of people they are. Criticism of politicians is to be expected. Usually it comes from an alternative party, or from a person who holds the same position in a different municipality. The rule of compliments and insults is a rule of mentoring, not a rule of politics.

A president often serves also as a mentor. A mentor should not feed his charges ego. Telling the people they are 'exceptional' feeds the public-ego. Obviously with wide-scale spying as an everyday fact of life in the United States the exceptional thing is the hubris of those who say that 'privacy is dead'. If privacy were really dead then how can some entity or person look at someone else's stuff without that surveilled person knowing about it. Privacy will only be dead when it is dead for everyone. Last time I read about it, for those who worry about such things: no one gets an email that says "Such and such person, agency, or spy, has accessed the following of your accounts and (what you thought was) secret data. Here is all of the information to access theirs." If the system were set up like that then privacy would be dead.

And so, in conclusion, if you don't want someone to read your blog then why did you post it? I know, it is scary to some that everything that they do is 'being watched', so they delude. But remember: if there are people praying on others the system is open enough (to those who are in it) that it will be come widely known who the bastards are. So anyone who is using the state surveillance system to prey on the rest of us probably can expect a slap-back.

Yes, there is a war in cyberspace. We are frying up the whole world with too much TCP/IP flying around just so some can feel 'secure' in their 'rulership.' This is just gardan variety governmental and institutional dementia, the delusion of 'rulership' by ordinary (though very well connected) people who may be deluded to think of themselves as 'exceptional', 'rulers', 'masters'. Anyone with a sense of Emancipation knows that to emancipate the mind held captive by greed and narcissism is a highly laudable goal!

First the Israelites were freed from physical slavery. They then all died and only their children were allowed to go to the holy land. That important concept must be remembered.

Exceptional? Free the institutionally demented and ideological nepotistic from their delusions of rulership and free them from their slavery of self. One who holds himself captive to delusions of exceptionallism may embark onto futile causes.

To rest, to keep still, to meditate before action, that is the better way. Plan, prepare before you expend.

One more note: as a word 'exceptionalism' is a new one. It doesn't show up as a valid spelling from the dictionary that I have loaded. The on-line dictionary says that the first known use was 1929. So, as a word, it is a new one. And what does it mean? It means 'different from the norm' not 'better than' as it is used polemically by some.

as an example . . . I have tried to do some introspective things as I come into awareness of my own flaws, and recognize the way I act and correct my self and make a better narrative for myself and for others.

the constant change
 is kind-of the point . . .

change without continuity and tradition is often very hard to manage for those thrust into it. And thus the frame of things gives a place for the change to happen. If you violate that idea then you are coming up with something completely different and maybe no one will want to see your new idea, or use your great, new venue, because it's too far out, and very far away from what they currently care about. It's a nether or a meta and it's merely for a lark? Or does it become the next big thing? As fun as graphics are (CGI) and animation, and making a world to fly around in (like minetest, which is easy when you learn how) ultimately such a meta is a hollow place. It's a distraction during the season of gaming. It allows one to brush up on geometry and math, and architectural design, it gives people training in computer languages, it allows someone to make some graphical ideas, and pass a few hours of time every few days or so . . .

To live within such a realm really isn't possible.

Fedora 40

After 40 different versions what can one say about it anymore? It's installed in all my systems, a day earlier. There are a few minor issues, but no show stoppers.

I did some stuff with lvm to resize a root area. That took a very long time. It's on a machine that maybe just should be retired . . .

Fedora Core 38 beta

Ya, I decided to load Fedora Core 38 Beta about a month ago, and this machine kept shutting down . . . I think I finally fixed it. Tomorrow is the big release day for the Fedora Core 38. My production workstation is still running FC37. I don't know if I'll jump right on it right away. . .

my server is still resetting, or maybe I have it fixed. I decided to just remove plasma-desktop, as I don't use it. The journals were giving all kinds of errors with that, and I think that might have been the issue, conflicting with the gdm that I do use. Worst case I'd just go to runlevel 3 but, as I said in another column, I don't really even know if anyone views these pages anyway.

My production box would upgrade but the dnf says it would downgrade grum and associated tools, and that's never a good thing to do. I'm just not going to do it! anyway I'll check tomorrow when the offical release is and probably do it then. If I'm in the mood.

So now I've run every version of Fedora serving this website! that's a long time.

Fedora Core 36 beta

It took some time to figure out how to defeat the new screensaver built in, but I was able to. It's the biggest downside to the new Gnome.

I set the keybindings to something I don't use, and then put in a custom keybinding to use the old tool.

There are other minor things that annoy too, like the restoration of a deleted file that I always have to delete again on every FC core upgrade. The file is name camera-shutte.oga. It's in /usr/share/sounds/freedesktop/stereo

At the precipice of coding.

a mountain trail often has a place with a great view and a perilous fall if you wonder just a bit too far to one side of the trail. It's called a precipice. It's not a scary place. It's a safe place that one passes through.

OK, so I've done an update to FC34.

the biggest issue was . . . . drum roll . . .a lock up of gnome.

and if i clicked on the activities button I would need to reload (log out log back in).

I was able to run stuff without that, and thus determined a list of files that might need to be removed. I did as full reinstall of gnome as such:

dnf reinstall gnome

then I did a

dnf list installed |grep fc33

which gave me a list of files to consider uninstalling.

from that I got the following:

first odd issue:

sudo was not at first working! I had to install it! I kept the configuration file so I have my preferences still set up.

there are still some fc33 packages, (I also looked for fc32 packages, anything older that was gnome)

if removing a package also removed large numbers of other packages, I left it. For each of the few that I did remove, I always would make sure by reading what would happen before agreeing to the transaction.

now the gnome-shell is working and it doesn't lock up. So which of the packages that I removed made the difference? I am not sure.

and so after just a few short hours of install, I've got my system working in away that seems normal.

the new gnome shell moves the icons to the bottom of the screen.

I find gnome-shell to be annoyingly poppy at times. I tend to do things rapidly, and all the popping can be nauseating.

It is helpful to learn how to use dnf. I've found that the reverse history stuff works as long as you haven't made too many changes. It's a dicey, though, to try and go back to an older revision but I did it ONCE. Next time it didn't work out so well. AT that point it was installing dnf and yum from rpms.

and I had success. It's the kind of thing that when you know how to do it . . .

but there was one other trick that I needed and it was a scary way to reset a password and I did discover how to do it. I'm not sharing that one (barely remember) it's like these things exist in a nether, and it's best to . . . let the knowledge fade unless you need it. It's too scary to dwell in that space.

anyway, gnome shell is working. It's not flighty and hanging up. And all it took was to remove the old packages of gnome that might conflict with it. And now I can continue with my review.
