Stand with the Just Question Platitudes
In the case of some folks having dogs sicked on them, in North Dakota, some Sioux, I think, I didn't believe it and didn't really want to see it. It's just such horrible news. But apparently they know who the head creep with dogs on a leash was. . . and Anonymous (the collective) has outted someone who they believe to be that person. My comment: what if you got it wrong? The victims of the incivility of the hired-gun-creep of the pipeline (and the lyrics to a song) supposedly want these people to be prosecuted for various (alleged, still) offenses. Ya, alledged, but you can watch a clip of these 'allegations'. So it must seem clear to some that the one with the vicious dogs and making those dogs act like that, that one, who is shown, from reports (cause I didn't watch it myself) basically terrorizing people with the dogs.
Protesters must be respected. And non-violence interaction should not be met with vicious use of trained canines. Dogs, for the most part, will be sweet if you want them to be and dogs do not learn how to be vicious beasts on their own. Training dogs to be that way is a choice, the use of a dog like that most likely violates laws against asault.
And only for some purposes do we, some of us, us high-horsers (oh, please deride this if you mustd, but just give a good link here), belive that the use of dogs for attack or guard purposes kind-of violates the spirit of comradery that humans and dogs are supposed to have. Dogs should not be that way to humans, but only to vicious creatures attacking humans, in a defense mode. We all know how a dog might react when faced by a bear that threatens it's human friends.
Any way, the people who were outted as the dog handler and her family don't even live in North Dakota. So you wonder why some worry about federalized mandates for law enforcement. Local police should be, just that, local. And no Sioux is going to do that to another Sioux. I say this without having any evidence, it just sounds right.
Well, I don't believe it was correct for the names to be published like that. Instead there ought to be private litigation and force of tort: you've been served: this subpoena is to require you to be real, come and explain yourself. If there were criminal things being done, let the law take care of it.
Releasing names, like the collective Anonymous did, seems like an invitation to vigilante-justice.
Payback is a . . .
I'm all for Justice. Not for vigilantism. The process has to go before a judge. I don't care if there is a courthouse. But there had better be a prosecutor. And there had better be lawyers for both sides. And the process better result in this kind of thing being far less likely in the future, that people don't behave like that, and we aren't putting up with it. Stern and deliberate, but just and not unduly punitive. People make mistakes. The process, the civil process, does allow for forgiveness and for just compensation.
I don't like anonymous (not Anonymous, the collective) institutional meanness. And I understand that the people who were brutalized by dog-handlers deserve justice. I wish Anonymous, the collective, would try to work the system for what it is good for: protecting innocents brutalized by oppressive and regressive methods of . . . dog-handlers with a mean nature. But like for like, that is the tradition that many follow. I suggest not. I suggest the higher road. The ones who were brutalized do need to know who it were that did these things (alleged) so that they can slap them with a suit. Prosecutors need to know. But until there are public charges the public, at large, ought to be sequestered from this information. Because you might have gotten it wrong, Anonymous. You might have gotten it wrong and someone who doesn't deserve it will get attack dogs of a different kind driving down their block, calling them on the phone, making threats. It's all the same kind of behavior, equally as loathsome. I understand the tradition of the counter-beat-down. But we should have deprecated that kind of activity generations and generations ago. Publishing names and addresses of alleged beat-downers only encourages counter beat-downs. Counter beat-downs are still beat-downs and just as criminal. Violent retribution only makes things worse.
