Let me start by saying that I like The Big Bang Theory and have watched it since the very first episode. I even once, long ago, purchased the first two seasons on DVD, so I've been a fan and not just someone who watches occasionally. Well, tonight (Thursday May 12, 2016), in what I must say is off-character, Howard, the brillient, but also insequire engineer, turned into a paranoid . He gets an email from some USAF airforce officer and starts having paranoid delusions about the intent of it. One of the features of this character is that he is an aerospace engineer and also an astronaut. He spent time on the International Space Station, and also time at various NASA facilities. NASA facilities always have USAF on staff, or there on temporary duty. It's part of the whole deal, everyone works on the same projects, different projects, but the USAF guys/gals/whatevers are there in their wonderfully styling blues, and USAF engineers are there too with their clipboards and the acquistion procurement professional certifacations so that they know how to do proper contracting. Howard would have to be familiar with all of that, and would thus not have a fear of contact by the USAF.
The character of Howard Wallowitz, if he'd been working for NASA, would have also been familiar with the various processes associated concerning government billeting, and the various processes of military procurement and payroll. Howard would have most likely already have had contacts within the United States Air Force, both civilian engineers and military officers, especially captains, and also air men (air people? what are they calling them these days?). He may have also had an airman assigned to him when he was an astronaut, or working in a high bay doing integration of his toilet seat invention. Howard would have no fear of being contacted by the United States Air Force. Instead he would sense opportunity knocking when he got the email and react with an 'oh goody' reaction, knowing that his good ideas would be honestly respected by the procurement officers of the United States Government and that he would be fairly compensated and treated as a valued inventor and trusted supplier. The character of Howard Wallowitz would be pro USAF, and almost a booster for it, understanding the importance of the military procurement process, and the historical roll of the United States Military (DOD) in developing and procuring the highest end technology, and developing the most modern processes, equipments, methods and organizational research. DOD, the armed services, and the scientists and engineers of the United State Government have a highly evolved acquisition process, an engineer of Howard's caliber would be on this inside of this.
And so, if Howard did get an email from The United States Air Force, as in tonight's plot, he should not react as he did in this episode. Howard, as an aerospace engineer, would understand that most of the jobs in that field are either at NASA, or working for the USAF or one of it's contractors. He'd be fully aware of all this and would have military officers as friends, and also as co-workers, on projects at his university. Thus tonights plot of The Big Bang Theory is full of holes. The professors at a major college would also military people. They would be students in class, as well as partners in various research and engineering efforts.
Disclosure: I worked for 8 years as a USAF Civilian engineer in a facility doing Aerospace Engineering, procurement, acquisition and also computer systems procurement and integration.
Howard simply would not become a paranoid like they portrayed him if he remains in character as previously performed. His character is already on the inside and thus he would not fear the USAF. He would know that it is a very worker friendly place and a great place to be employed, especially for those who are also aerospace engineers and astronauts like the Wallowitz character.
The USAF: a great organization, a friendly group. Nothing scary. And they are really awesome!
engineering tidbit: the technology for high quality digital communications was fully funded by the United States Government, the development of which was put into the hands of acquisition professionals many of whom were Air Force civilian engineers. So when you have your connection and you pay your bill for the digital service, remember who paid to have it developed in the first place.
