Politics for Poets

Sky King, Sky King. Do not answer. . .

Recently I've heard about what are known as SkyKing messages which get transmitted on side band channels in the short wave range, for mysterious purposes. They are presented on line in small audio clips, or if you ahve the gear you can hear them through a short wave radio reciever, if you know how to tune it to the correct side band. I'd recommend either method if you are up for it. Proably most people who aren't using it in their day to day are going to hear it on line, in an audio clip. It's a very kind of quality to these recordings.

I've always been a fan of wild modulation effects, like the sounds from the intro to 'the outer limits', a retro television science fiction TV show from the 1950's and early 1960's but played to death in reruns during the 70's and the 80's. so these "Sky King Sky King" messages are really rather nostalgic for me, having been fond of AM Radio and how it would fade and mix different channels that were on close frequences, especially at night, and especially while driving.

Part of why I find the Sky King messages so intriguing is because I used to drive late at night, back in the wild evenings of New England Mountain, Hill, road highway, dunes, Islands, ferry, docks, roller coasters, Ferris wheel, a box of salt water taffy purchased while traveling on vacation ( maybe in Ocean City, Maryland?).

The AM radio. In the middle of the night. The voices floating within weird oscillation modulations, and drifting between a country song about loss of love and loss of transmission on a poor choice of a truck, purchased from a person down on his luck, but he made it run better. The station bleeds off after a while and you can almost hear people talking, somewhere, across the night, as if they know someone is listening, and what is it that they are talking about, but often you can't make out what they are saying, just the sense of their vibrations. I'd drive on for a while, because this effect can still happen, just not as cool when you can't turn an analog modulator knob on the AM radio. With the analog knob there is smooth and obvious transition between stations. With the digital tuning now you hop from digital tuned frequency to digital tuned frequency, and there is a complete transition, a whole other universe of distant music and voices bleeding together, like waves, giant waves, carry these voices (like they are all part of some mysterious orchestra), like it's a sonorous maiden in a craft on big waves of swelling ocean. Ocean is swelling and she's singing out here 'AHHHH A AHHH A AHH AHH AHH A ' arpegiation, and so are a whole lot of other voices as if people in their own various crafts, on their own tempestuous ocean, each, I'd assume, some where out there in the world, and doing it in front of a micro phone? But you know it isn't always. And maybe they are all on the same ocean, if they drift upon an allegorical ocean?

and the sports talk AM twenty, call words, they'll say the call letters of the station. And you realize you are hearing a discussion about Major League Baseball coupled in with some garden show in a tony town, where the river flows high, the river dries up. There is another river for all of them if that happens. It's like they are calling out in some way to the world, like birds that live in the ethereal, and contemplate the very many days of times, in some strange and none-creepy way, as if they could but speak freely, please just speak freely. If it's a plea, on some side channel, on the short wavelength part of the spectrum (there is an exact frequency at which to listen.) maybe a couple of frequencies.

So it is romantic. There is a kind of mythological presence. We want to imagine that there are good people communicating necessary messaging, and if they need to make an urgent broadcast, they do it in ernast, fully in control. Someone else hears it and knows what that message means. And there are giant cogs s of purpose in the world that make it all-right for everyone, and if anyone needs help, there will be an ernest attempt to provide it by willing heroes. We want to believe that help would come. "Come back from your deep mission and realize that we always wanted you back even though we never knew who you were or why you had to go off so far and leave us for so long. There is still a home for you people who hear your call, giving your important message. They have a place for you at their tables. . . "

So they say 'do not answer' because they must know that people are going to want to respond. How could you not want to? When there is such ernast purpose in each message, even though we have no idea what any of it means. . . But we want to believe it's for the good of the world, for all of humanity, without divisions between the people of the world that hamper good things from happening.

Maybe we all wish we had some urgent and holy purpose, to keep listening and waiting for that call to action. These mysterious radio broadcasts harken us back to any and every memory of the past midnight car ride, AM radio; stations bleeding together, as if many separate voices unknowingly, and in harmonious dischord, sing with a commonality, as if in some weird spiritual communion, across the very many low rolling hills, off towards the infinities of purposeful loving action and contemplation, as if some of the voices just keep echoing from voices who were broadcast fifty or seventy years earlier, which, locked within the modulating carrier some how bounced around and came back and still here to be heard, between the other channels, always blended in, like the voices of constant praying people, hoping that all SkyKings, and any one with a similar kind of common and useful purpose, make it back to their homes and fields and fountains and garden time places with family, friends, or fellow travellors.

some of these seem to mean, Some seem to have returned from having travelled off into the universes of lost time passed, calling out to the future: "It's all going to be OK. There might be some rough patches, but it will all work out fine. Everything is going to be alright."

The SkyKing messages are reported on-line as being for military communications. I won't ape what I read about it. I will suggest finding out how to hear the messages. Even though they will be meaningless, they will still convey an eerie sense of adventure and purpose . . . almost romantic . . . for the cause of doing right in the world, and beyond.

if you don't have proper fonts installed you won't see what this picture shows: the output of the echo command with unicode symbols as input. If you are blind basically the unicode are symbols that you could feel as shapes. If you have a 'font box', which would be like that divice with all the pins in it that you can place your hand inside, and the shape of your hand will appear on the surface. If such a thing locked, it would then let a blind person feel it and they would feel the shape. such a device that does that for font shapes would greatly aid the blind. It would be a 'kind of' high resolution new-braille. Call it a 'sean-box' font reader.
