Politics must always be nonviolent.

confronting rioters is a bad idea unless you are an officer of the law. If you are defending your business or neighborhood, then fine, you take your stand. But at a political event the correct response is to do what Martin Luther King taught: nonviolence. In that case, as well, it is best to retreat.

Of course the response if they are attacking is to defend oneself, in a way as appropriate. but flight from the scene, away from the violence is always the better choice.

If it shameful to suggest that the response to a stage-rushing bum alleged from another candidate is met with the same but sent by the other candidate. Candidates should never suggest such behavior.

Also, people have to rely on the police, the FBI, and other agents of law and order. Supporters of one candidate must not confront or agitate those of another. And candidates should always harshly condemn such activity.

If not, if people are promoting violence, not just rowdy politicking but head bashing, if people are doing that: we live in a country of laws and we spend billions to fund police and military to protect the population from rule of thuggery. And if the police don't meet that obligation? When does that happen?

The world has very many eyes now. Thuggery and bully-boy politics can be copiously documented if it does occur. And law enforcement will enforce the laws and prosecutors will prosecute. The violent will be convicted. It won't be based upon ideology. It will not be about special category privilege. Violence will not be tolerated.

When Jesus says to turn the other cheek he is suggesting not meeting hate with hate. That is what politicians need to do, as well. The fault of casting some as villains when they aren't and going to battle with them, when they aren't doing it to you but only accused . . . that is how bad blood gets started. We just don't have that tradition in America and we should not start it now. Our politics should proceed non-violently.

A non violent response is the only valid political response. No excuses.
