The Left Column

Politics for Poets

Crispness of Autumn

Cliche, oh cliche. It's that time of year again.

same headlines every year

It's that time when we think what we would do if we'd thought of it before and we had the time and the resources. Fuss here and there and drive yourself crazy. It's very hard to redo a place while you still live in it.

Less is more. The empty wall as a statement of purpose. Focus of a room? There is nothing in it. Once, on a television show, it was Eddie and BaBara in New Jersey at Eddie's house with nothing in it. He made the doyenne of NBC sit on the floor (was it NBC?). It was obviously a put on. He probably rented the house just so tht they could have the interview there and maybe never lived in it. Or he had it emptied out just for the humourous effect of making a beat on the interview show with barabara W.

Those of us with seemingly normal lives have a hard time stepping out of them for the purpose of a humorous beat like Eddie Murphy could in the 1980s. So what do we do when we need to scale back and shed the things that we hoard, all the time imaginging that it will some how make our lives better. There is a point of shedding, when a person has to. It can happen in a natural and controlled, and conscious way. Or it will happen in some other way. If we keep getting Fhatter and Fhatter with shtuff, then we get weighted down and our lives get a drag on account of the weight of the stuff.

Or, put it another way, if the river is full of the deritis of life, either physically, with stuff; or emotionally with hangups and delusions, false hopes and day dreams that will never come true, if we have littered the marshlands of our peaceful delta of our inner peace (that deep water down river in your soul, where you float in the total rest of understanding except . . . if you'd littered it wiht debree and made it a navigation nightmare. No deep water, but the channel is cluttered with stuff, both physical and emotional.

But the river needs a base. And if there weren't a bottom the water would have flowed away by now. Or if there isn't really a bottom, there is a down below, like at a water fall. So if you go over there is a place where you end up, but you might not be in the same condition as you were when you were at the top of the falls. Better not get in the water there. Take a transport down the incline to get to the pool below if you must swim in the torrents below the falls. What kind of creature are you then? Child of turmoil? Boiling rapids? In Los Angeles (LA) it might be hard to imagine just how much water floods over Niagra Falls on a day when they let the river flow. It's a lot. All of it flowing off towards the Atlantic, past Montreal, out into the deep blue sea. If it were the Basin and Range or the Sierra, they'd make sure all that water would be put to use somewhere. But in the East there is just so much more water tht the only thing that we can do is to clear the drains and let the rivers run high when the rains come.

Well, so, if your life is in full flood then it might be nice to have some stuff. Maybe a life raft? But the thing about having stuff is that stuff has a useful place. And if you leave the thing or items in their useful place, and you use them as needed, and then put the items back to the same spot, out of sight out of mind, you don't bring the liferaft into the house with you. You leave it on the yaught so if the yaught goes down you get in the life boat. And even more stuff, life preservers, which the Coast Guard requires tht you also have. More stuff that isn't any good if it's at the top of a spruce tree up a mountainside on one of your many properties (it could be just in your mind). You want to be wearing the life jacket by the time you are in the life boat. And , if you some how end up in the water we do hope that you have on that vest. But if you don't and the waterfall is right in front of you and you can't swim to the shore, and there isn't anyone in this dream who can save you because you forgot you were just dreaming this, then that life jacket might not make any difference at all except to make it easier to find a floating body that is wearing a bright orange vest. Not something you want to think about at the coffee machine waiting for your morning brew, shivvers of first frost on the pumpkin you ran your finger through that small amount of ice.

So less is often more. Less stuff. More empty wall. Less crap on a shelf gathering dust. Less but not none.

Less but not nothing

We can all imagine a sparseness that is too thin. We can picture that cabin with out any food in the pantry. We get to the vacant appartment and there is no food in the kitchen. You have to bring everything with you. YOu have to get it if you need it somewhere else.

So you go down to get spoons for the soup and you find that they are more costly than you thought. After all youy spent the money on soup, no thinking about bowls or spoons, pots or ladels. All of this you might need. It costs money to get it but how much? If not money than at least time gathering it from a generous relative. They have a lot of stuff. Maybe too many ladels. They let you have one. An old pan that they just could not throw away. It has a story. They want to tell it but forget about it. You take that too. That is how you heated up the soup.

The soup came from a diner in your new town. You bought it and put it in the refridgerator. When you needed to heat it you poured that soup into a pan. That's when you realized that you didn't have any spoons. Not even plastic ones.

Finally you make it to a thrift store where you can buy silverware in a bag for 4 dollars. If you have a coupon it's even less. It all matches, but it's not new and looks dingy. It functions. Stuff. More stuff. Grandma's flatware. Cups that you got from your sister when you left for college thirty seven years ago. Pennies that you put in a jar from 25 years ago. A box of change from your uncle's house that you got when you helped clean out the place your uncle let you keep it. It's all silver dimes and quarters. maybe a small piece of gold and some silver dollars. Twelve rolls of buffulo nickels. A box of antique French postage stamps with a famous pose of a famous lady.

Stuff. Too much stuff. Old chairs. Functioning furniture, none of which matches. You can't just move and then move back. How do you decide what to donate, what to keep, what to recycle, what to sell, and what to throw away?

The best that I can do is to pray for guidance. It's hard. It might seem obvious at times, what a bold move would be, back up the dump truck and fill it up with everything here. If there were a list of things that I would have to take with me? I could start with that.

But it's really that river, that river that might have a waterfall, with so much water that it's always in full flood, where we really dwell clutching our life vest and praying that we know to swim to shore if we get to close to the rapids. Or sprout wings and venture aloft! It's a dream, right, your own. So you can do stuff like that if you know how to.

And once you know where you are, and how to safely traverse up or down stream, be it a real river or a methaphor for conscious/subconscious/metaconcious/hypnogogic process of mind in dream,or in transe , or in a meditative unknowing (which may be unknown as well), when you know how to navigate the rivers of your life, and you knw where all the gorges are, and the way that the rivers flow, you know where to go and where not to go and then all that stuff, in the real world, well, it just doesn't matter anymore. It's not important. Soul work is far more important. That river of your own, the wellbeing of the deep channels of your own flow, that life of yours where you cut into the hard stone. What is that stone? The real world? The social life of all souls? The reality of this life with all these other billions souls? (trillions souls?) What is that hard stone upon which your river flows?

Some stuff, some stone, on which the river flows? And wondering where allegories breakdown. There is still truth. The allegory just shines a light on it, and so shadows have to be there too. And so in conclusion . . .

In conclusion work on the stuff of mind, and clearing out the unneeded things of mind that clutter up your conscious and subconscious mind. And if you get that right the rest of it will be what it should be no matter what it seems like to anyone else who might happen upon your scene. If your right on the inside, the outside will conform to your inner ways. It will all just work for you.

Loving you is the same as loving me.

 How many tracks?
 Is that booming thunder?
 Do you surrender your heart

how hard is it to use these new symbols in your stuff? Well, first you need to know that they exist. Second, you can just cut and paste them.

I've got a message for . . . Mr Bash (an alias for someone else). Mr Bash, if I use brace expansion with the dot-dot idiom, ie like this:

echo -e {🌃..🌅}{🌍..🌏}{🌑..🌚}" "

why does that not work when

echo -e {🌃,🌄,🌅}{🌍,🌎,🌏}{🌑,🌒,🌓,🌔,🌕,🌖,🌗,🌘,🌙,🌚}" "

 this outputs a little easier:
 echo -e {🌃,🌄,🌅}{🌍,🌎,🌏}{🌑,🌒,🌓,🌔,🌕,🌖,🌗,🌘,🌙,🌚}" "|fmt -w 45

in order to find symbols that you don't have
yet, you can input the code into the echo command
with the hex number of the symbol.
There is a way to echo out blocks of code.
If you try and echo out a million characters you will
experience . . . issues with performance.

Also: unless you have the fonts that define these you
don't see the pretty characters.

here is an image that shows you the output
that I see from the echo on my system:

alright, then, with that, I can do something
creative (as I have done before, see the message column)
with my output.

if you don't have proper fonts installed you won't see what this picture shows: the output of the echo command with unicode symbols as input. If you are blind basically the unicode are symbols that you could feel as shapes. If you have a 'font box', which would be like that divice with all the pins in it that you can place your hand inside, and the shape of your hand will appear on the surface.
