The Left Column

Politics for Poets

wet rug

I had to deal with a leak from a dehumidifier and threw an old rug out a second story window into my side yard. It's old. And now part of it is wet. And it's late, I was already sleeping. I wanted to just check and make sure I hadn't left some fans running, and then I noticed the wetness.

So even though I was ready to go to sleep, I had to do a lot of work, put the bed on it's side, I tried to slide that old rug out from underneath the bed, but it was too big. So I had to take the bed up and turn the frame on it's side.

Tomorrow I'll take another look at the rug. I dragged it to another part of the yard. It wasn't too wet, but if it down-pours like it might it will be. If not then I'll unroll it in the sun, get some carpet cleaner, and save it (or part of it). Or is that too much work for a twenty year old area rug? It's not in bad shape. I'll figure it out tomorrow.

Scare Mongers

The scare mongers are going 'boo' a lot this month. The click bait has very low quality content associated with it.

they say to . . . blah blah blah in order to avoid the coming . . . . blah blah blah blah blah or else there will be . . . blah and woe blah and blah. Oh no, what are we all supposed to do?

And misinformation is rampent. What source of news do you trust these days? Certainly not me. Trust me you shouldn't trust me because I am a novelist, a song writer, a poet, a commentator, literary critic, a music composer, a photographer, a software engineer, a robotics and automation expert (for certain types of robotics, the no-nines kind, it's a 1.0 reliability). But I am not a journalist. Nor am I a prosecutor. Nor a law enforcement officer.

The trouble with law is that it only works when we believe in it. When it stops making sense, and some people don't follow it, then everyone starts to wonder if they should too.

Most people do what they think is right. Many do what they know is wrong. At least leaders should follow the law. But when they don't? The people get down hearted. The get upset about the news? Hardly. Crack a smile, or a beer, or just whatever you enjoy and understand that anything that isn't directly associated with you, that you don't experience first hand, ought to have no effect on your state of mind and your sense of well-being. And so if the news troubles you, it's you and not the news. Get some sleep. Don't be upset about life. Let yourself rest for a while.

People who are in the news spreading panic do it for their own reasons. Is it for clicks to make advertising pennies? Who knows. But the point is that there is a very low-brow tred in the way that news gets reported where the spin of failure and decay is always put to the front. It's like all those commercials for 'health' products that run down litanies of diseases just to put the fear in people. OK, maybe not. But that is an effect.

If it's a commercial that is supposed to be about health, to make people healthy, why put it in a form that instead it is like the grim reaper and his sword. Some imagined alment that we get and die from because we believe we have it but we don't really. Wouldn't that be terrible. Yes, the doctor says you suffer from hypocondria and that there is no hope for you. It's terminal.

If it's only to sell product?

Is there a draft in here?

 What do you hope for?
What's it that you're talkin' about?
What's it make you (start) screaming and shouting
Do you claim to truth if your living without it?
 Tell me now
 What do you hope for?
 Tell me now
 What do you hope for?

What they claim is good
 for 'the environment'
   really sucks
  for the forest.

how hard is it to use these new symbols in your stuff? Well, first you need to know that they exist. Second, you can just cut and paste them.

I've got a message for . . . Mr Bash (an alias for someone else). Mr Bash, if I use brace expansion with the dot-dot idiom, ie like this:

echo -e {🌃..🌅}{🌍..🌏}{🌑..🌚}" "

why does that not work when

echo -e {🌃,🌄,🌅}{🌍,🌎,🌏}{🌑,🌒,🌓,🌔,🌕,🌖,🌗,🌘,🌙,🌚}" "

 this outputs a little easier:
 echo -e {🌃,🌄,🌅}{🌍,🌎,🌏}{🌑,🌒,🌓,🌔,🌕,🌖,🌗,🌘,🌙,🌚}" "|fmt -w 45

in order to find symbols that you don't have
yet, you can input the code into the echo command
with the hex number of the symbol.
There is a way to echo out blocks of code.
If you try and echo out a million characters you will
experience . . . issues with performance.

Also: unless you have the fonts that define these you
don't see the pretty characters.

here is an image that shows you the output
that I see from the echo on my system:

alright, then, with that, I can do something
creative (as I have done before, see the message column)
with my output.

if you don't have proper fonts installed you won't see what this picture shows: the output of the echo command with unicode symbols as input. If you are blind basically the unicode are symbols that you could feel as shapes. If you have a 'font box', which would be like that divice with all the pins in it that you can place your hand inside, and the shape of your hand will appear on the surface. If such a thing locked, it would then let a blind person feel it and they would feel the shape. such a device that does that for font shapes would greatly aid the blind. It would be a 'kind of' high resolution new-braille. Call it a 'sean-box' font reader.

will? Maybe I've not ordered the elements properly. Well that little snippit doesn't work that well but t
