The Left Column

Politics for Poets

Polsters say . . .

Aug 17, 2015

Polls are often unreliable.

On line polls: especially so! It's a very select population. Do not be fooled by 'polls' on website. I never vote in such things unless I just do it without thinking. (my rule is broken) . I do like to look at the results. The results have no 'scientific' basis. Well, polls are about 'opinions' and sampling theory is about items and qualities of items. The 'quality' of the 'item' in a poll is the idea that the person agrees with or disagrees with. There is never any 'science' in a political opinion poll.

And there are those polls that ask 'who will you vote for.' Will they really get to the polls on election day to cast their vote? So don't believe the polls.

But you can't discount them either. Especially if they followed the rules for sampling and use the well accepted principles of sampling theory and statistics.

And so, in conclusion: Polls can be useful. Belief? Belief in polls? That might not be as useful.

 What do you hope for?
What's it that you're talkin' about?
What's it make you (start) screaming and shouting
Do you claim to truth if your living without it?
 Tell me now
 What do you hope for?
 Tell me now
 What do you hope for?

What they claim is good
 for 'the environment'
   really sucks
    for the forest.

how hard is it to use these new symbols in your stuff? Well, first you need to know that they exist. Second, you can just cut and paste them.

I've got a message for . . . Mr Bash (an alias for someone else). Mr Bash, if I use brace expansion with the dot-dot idiom, ie like this:

echo -e {🌃..🌅}{🌍..🌏}{🌑..🌚}" "

why does that not work when

echo -e {🌃,🌄,🌅}{🌍,🌎,🌏}{🌑,🌒,🌓,🌔,🌕,🌖,🌗,🌘,🌙,🌚}" "

 this outputs a little easier:
 echo -e {🌃,🌄,🌅}{🌍,🌎,🌏}{🌑,🌒,🌓,🌔,🌕,🌖,🌗,🌘,🌙,🌚}" "|fmt -w 45

in order to find symbols that you don't have
yet, you can input the code into the echo command
with the hex number of the symbol.
There is a way to echo out blocks of code.
If you try and echo out a million characters you will
experience . . . issues with performance.

Also: unless you have the fonts that define these you
don't see the pretty characters.

here is an image that shows you the output
that I see from the echo on my system:

alright, then, with that, I can do something
creative (as I have done before, see the message column)
with my output.

if you don't have proper fonts installed you won't see what this picture shows: the output of the echo command with unicode symbols as input. If you are blind basically the unicode are symbols that you could feel as shapes. If you have a 'font box', which would be like that divice with all the pins in it that you can place your hand inside, and the shape of your hand will appear on the surface. If such a thing locked, it would then let a blind person feel it and they would feel the shape. such a device that does that for font shapes would greatly aid the blind. It would be a 'kind of' high resolution new-braille. Call it a 'sean-box' font reader.

will? Maybe I've not ordered the elements properly. Well that little snippit doesn't work that well but t
