This year
he brings no presents
he makes no commitments.
He spends his day is sarrow
he forgets to take his vitamins.
He wonders through the Mall.
They look at him funny
because he smells.
He ends up alone.
Tired
sitting on a concrete block
at the end of the parking garage
with no where to go
no one to see
they love him
they know him
they see him
Any one of them would take him in.

What do you do at the end of the day
when home is a box near the highway?

back when color mattered
he thought to
paint the kitchen wall
a pale kind of blue
not really of the sky
not really a sapphire blue,
not even royal
and without a hint of cornflower
nothing of periwinkle
or forget-me-nots
that skirt
those far away lawns
some kind of blue
that he can't remember
and it doesn't matter now
those other blues,
the real blues
they're still all out there.
no paint needed.
Can of pain, unused,
14 years old
and a tube of old dried caulk.
