    my rainy day Tuesday
     desparate guy rushing towards a dead end
     being chased.

She was going to cook
A Christmas duck
Because it woke her
when she was dreaming
of Grammie like grammie
was right there in the room with her.
The Winter sun at 6 A.M. pouring across the salt marsh.
The rays of light like lines drawn on a watercolor canvas.
Loud quacking.
She make a stew of that duck.
Grammie. She'd been dreaming of grammie
like grammie wsa in the room.
She could feel grammie in the room.

So she got her shot gun and thought
Before noon, even earlier, "get the dogs, let's romp.
I've got my cancelled stamp on my hat.
It's not political, some ducks just have it coming."

The dog is eager to please her.
She spies that duck way off in the salt marsh.
She raises the sights.
She thinks about it.

What would grammie say?
a squacking duck?
Scrawny.
Not a good Christmas feast,
you might as well be eating crow.

So she lowered the sights,
unloaded the chamber
and headed back to her house.
It wasn't even 7 A.M.

Later, after she was rested,
she'd had a better sleep,
her hip ached less,
she felt none of the loneliness
that she had in the days before.

She looked through that musty drawer of photos
An old picture of grammie
with a baby, mother!
Mother crawling on the lawn
chasing a duck.
a mother duck.
a trail of ducklings.
At this same house
back when it was just a seaside cabin
so many years ago.

That day
she brought the old rifle
to a mueseum in Maine.
And if she ever wants to use it again
she can go and get it
but she never does.
And for Christmas feast?
She went and sang 
in the midnight choir 
and feasted on the crowd.
