GIS Maps and mapping in Open Source
Review of the state of two opensource mapping clients available on fc13 qgis: sigsef when I run it from intall from fedora yum repository. Try to compile it and I don't get anywhere. qlandkarte this will run, but it loads no data. hints at websites say you usually need to 'buy' the data. And there are no samples. Is this yet another opensource project hyjacked by marketting and sales to be useless unless bundled onto a cell phone? Here are the three types of data that can be loaded (from the menus): GPS-Exchange Geochachng.com Easy GPS MapSource Here are two map options (from the menus): load map import map As often in opensource, there is nothing that explains anything. No help, nothing. And, as is typical in the case of many things that were once 'free to use' the project is 'dead', as stated on the following URL: http://qlandkarte.sourceforge.net/ . And the 'future' is listed as a fork of this: qlandkartegt qlandkartegt The forked project is also available in the fc13 yum repository. However, it, as well as qgis does not work. It sigsefs. Probably for the same reason. More on this in a future column. You can, of course, use mapperelli for maps of parts of New England and California. This is still free to use from my website at the following links:
