Upgrade barf on Notebook HP.
Did I mention previous in some other column here at urge central about my dream of my notebook computer backpack falling out the back of my station wagon (I don't really have a station wagon) and smashing on the interstate in Vermont on my way to somewhere else? I think that I did somewhere. In any case that is essentially what is happening in the sense that, after all the many years of having the thing, I am finally just doing a clean install with an FC Linux instead of doing an upgrade. This was not a choice but . . . I didn't have anything on that machine that I didn't also have elsewhere so . . . I was fine with the idea that if things didn't work out then I would just do a fresh install. Many recommend a separate home directory, on a drive different from where the operating system is installed. That way any change in operating system can be accomplished with a fresh install everytime if need be. Often times a development machine has a very special set of tools that one needs to use. The reason for doing an upgrade is so that all of that installation will remain. This allows for a configuration as close to what was before as possible. Naturally every time one updates a package then there are changes so . . . configurations must migrate and change. For example Linux, as it boots, will tell you all kinds of things. "Such and such interface is depracated and will no longer be supported" and other messages like that, of a seemingly ominous nature. No big whoop. When the stuff doesn't work anymore you will notice it then if it matters to you. It really doesn't matter much for a lot of it. It might be a left over udev rule from some device that you don't even use anymore. It could be a configuration file in the wrong place. Yes, deal with these. But these kinds of warnings are rarely show-stopping emergencies. I saw a bootlog viewer somewhere in the tools which seems like a new thing for FC13. I went to look for it, but I can't seem to find it again. Oh well, if I do find it again then I may decide to write about it here. WP. 2:25 PM May 28, 2010
