And did he ever even get to that part about 'helmet safety' and that the guy in the photo wasn't wearing one?

Oh, no, yet another topic for the echo factory to pretend that people care about and repeat over and over.

 this is a lot more
             fun
         than wading

if you don't have proper fonts installed you won't see what this picture shows: the output of the echo command with unicode symbols as input. If you are blind basically the unicode are symbols that you could feel as shapes. If you have a 'font box', which would be like that divice with all the pins in it that you can place your hand inside, and the shape of your hand will appear on the surface. If such a thing locked, it would then let a blind person feel it and they would feel the shape. such a device that does that for font shapes would greatly aid the blind. It would be a 'kind of' high resolution new-braille. Call it a 'sean-box' font reader.

Work on what has been spoiled

Private Performance

commentary from 2004, from "The Collected Rants" The Collected Rants of Bill Perilli Sept 29, 2004

The problem with GIS user input seems to me to be that the user is a person who may not want to put input into the system. For example a person who is a hiker might consider writing a book about his favorites spots in the mountains. But then after publishing the book he regrets revealing his secrets to the public because he now finds that his quite spots become overrun with new hikers. Why? Because he told them about the places in the book.

The same would be true about GIS for motor traffic. Publishing the data on what routes are faster to get from hither to tither results in those faster routes being advertised. People who need to go between the two places now know a 'faster way'. However if they all try to use that information at the same time, then there is suddenly a traffic jam. So when we have a short cut and we tell everyone to use it, then it might not be a short cut anymore.

Also, the idea of having user input involves tracking a user which may violate his privacy. When I was working with some construction crews I thought about this a lot. I realized that these guys did not want to have their lives tracked as they didn't always do what they said they did or go where they said they were. They didn't lead 9-5 lives, and no one needed to know. They got their jobs done or they didn't get paid. And yet having a GPS and transmitter in the truck to allow for an easy truck inventory for the fleet was very desirable.

If we take tracking of motion to an extreame, one would could set up tracking that would be very percise, but then we would have a flood of data. If we can track a persons finger movements, we can track their keystrokes. We can track their handwriting. Fortunately the bandwidth to do this for everyone is huge. The ideas seems perposterous now. However, to do it for a small group perhaps wouldn't be impossible.

I believe that On-Star must have a plan to do something with all of the data that they collect. But if they do they could be compromising the privacy of the car owners. Obviously this is an area where caution and vigilance are needed to assure that new tyrannies do not arise from emerging technologies. I am not worried because if people feel they are violated, then they will disable the tracking. However, as this data is so useful for insurance accident investigations, and police criminal investigations, there might be a time when this kind of tracking is forced into acceptance. The British in London are using GPS to charge people to drive into the city.

At the point when police use GPS to blanket issuance of speeding tickets there will be public outcry and this issue then will become of major importance. It hasn't happened yet but given the huge number of police organizations it seems like just a small time before some one some where tries to do this.

'The question of owner ship of tracking data comes up. When actors are strapped to sensors and their motions control an computer generated animation they are considered to be acting for the camera. Do they then own the performance?

If a person is driving his secret short cut in his car and giving this data (unknowingly perhaps) to OnStar, does OnStar then have the right to publish this and sell it to others?

I would think that they should not have the right. I would hope that law allows that a persons motions and activities are his 'performance' and that publishing them would have to meet with approval of the performer. This is a lot to think about. But clearly there are some new issues here that need to be addressed.

The irony about the above piece from sept 2004 is that by then the enn-essay may have already been doing just what I described, but said took too much band-width to do.

Bad Jokes . . .

the old standby joke: what to do in case of a nuclear attack: put your head between your legs and kiss your . . . goodbye.

Worry about such things doesn't help you or anyone.

Work on what has been spoiled. But what about those who pretend that there isn't a problem?

If the forest service gives you fair warning about the impending erruption of the nearby volcano (Mt St Helens, was it 1980?) then who is at fault if the worst that can happen does? It's not about the government or authority. It's about the actuality of nature and how it really behaves. One volcano will destroy you suddenly. Or you will live through it and mourn for the dead. Let's hope for a third case, which should be for most things, adn the result of most events: the third case, the most importan6t and constant case: everyone lives through it and thus no one needs to mourn for any victims of the non-event. Like what happened in Hawaii. It was a not-happening. Maybe it was someone thinking 'hey, this is funny'. Or it was some psychotic finger on the button guy (unlikely) who 'pushed' the tizzy-switch. Everyone, OK, tell that old stock joke about kissing your . . . good bye. The punchline that was a non-punchline back in the early 1980's when that nuclear thing was a-hanging low: what are we all going to do, get in our cars and get on rt 3 north to New Hampshire? No, it wasn't going to matter. If it ever got that far, being 36th, we were told, on the 'this place is going to be destoryed -o- mometor' our town, not in a wilder way, was going to be 'blown up to hell and gone'. But that ended up being one of the third choice: that no , it didn't actually happened. We never had a nuclear event of that sort back in the early 1980s.

There were two nuclear events that did happen, and they were rather dire, back in the 1970's and 1980s: Three Mile Island, in Harrisberg, PA area. Cherynobel, a reactor of the old Soviet (and that's not an old-timesy folk-rockabilly band).

Work on what has been spoiled. The first thing a hotelier needs to do to get his staff to make a place sanitary for public inspection and eventual guests is to identify the problem. Permission to speak freely ought to be the rule for bosses and head directors, presidons, and other strange creatures of upper management. We ought not censor the one who is acessing the fate of things at that hotel chain, club Hell? Or something else? If it's a hellhole, then they say it's a hellhole, or a different type of hole it be, the other kinds. A house of that. A mouth like that. A person with that as their main feature: to give out the hell for anyone with whom they disagree. Instead of hearing the message, they pretend to a fowl message. This does not help.

The first step is to recognize that it is something that has been spoiled. It has become a hellhouse (not a hell house but a s__thouse). If you don't see it that way, then you don't rush for the bleach and the hazmatt suit. If governance is at the point of being so poison as to need a hazmat suit, then we are in a sad situation indeed. If you disagree with his choice of words, at least you can understand his emphatic request for a mop and bucket, a cup of bleach and a few gallons of water. Or how about cleanup robots, that spray the sidewalks with bleach like they have to do in San Diego now because it's turned into a hellhouse. Well, not a hellhouse, a s__thouse. It's Choloric. antiseptic activity is required.

Or the place should be abandoned. You can't do that to a whole country? The reason that you would 'take in' people from such countries is simple: to help them. But is it better to do something else instead? to give them the bleach and the mops? But then maybe someone says 'oh you busy bodies, imposing your theories on antiseptic livestyle upon a foreign nation. What if we say 'you can come and visit but only after you clean up your own room. But they are not our children ad we are not their parents and the interaction doesn't have a sitcom quality parent child explanation of events. We live in the real world.

Let's choose the third case

The third case is the boring non-click-bait story. In the third case story there are not casualties. There is no sense that anyone ever felt any sesne of peril. Whatever harmful event might have occured was mitigated quickly, if any such possibility even existed in the first place. Management will be notified. The situation will be handled. And if it were somethign caused by some unknown players, or whatever (whateva?) then they will be added to the watch list, and life will go on as normal.

The third boring case, about which no spy movie is ever made. The giant icecle of doom hanging over the heads of the citizens is removed before it ever became an issue. threats are noticed. Most of the times it is found to be nothing, but just caution of the watchers. If real peril is possible, the third solutin says 'this is a nothing.' It is not even a burger. It isn't even a burghar. Well, if it is a scoffing burghar, as novelettically this kind of creature is possible in a story, if not in the real world (like the Barrymoore character in Its a Wonderful Life), if such a creature is possible, and such a creature is out to do harm, the third solution is that they do not succeed. And they are known. And they are not allowed to keep being creeps and stealing. But that kind of person is a fiction, correct? I say yes such a person is actually a fiction and no such ultimately evil person even does exist but if they did . . . and there were heroes of the unknown who fight for the comic book ending of everyone is safe and supermensch catches all the fallacies before they ever get published, and there are no misspellings, and there are so many edits that its all perfect, and all inequality is solved forever just from the words. How far fetched.

So the better solution: if the road is icey, it is salted and made safe before anyone gets hurt. If the icecle hangs above the halls of governnace, it is removed safely so that non of the halls and walkways that the people need to be safe ever come under any kind of architectural distress from falling ice.

Dude
you wrecked my truck!
you got it stuck
on a highland sholder
perched atop a bolder
at a mountain pass
you'd stomped on the gas
and went rolling over
the mountain clover
in a mountian pass
stomping on the gas
at three AM
in the blizzarding wind
in the blizzarding wind
in the bilzzrding wind

At 3:15 the cell phone rang
it was your boss telling you you've gotta come in
the storm took down at least 33 polls,
and that's the story, just how it goes.
You said no way I'm stuck up here
my green bean buddy is full of fear
he says I got him stuck by jamming a gear
So we can't be coming anywhere near.

Dude
you wrecked my truck!
you got it stuck!
perched atop a blouder
near the mountain clover
by the mountain pass
you'd stomped on the gass
and popped the gear
which we had to hear
the tires chirpping loud
the metal scraped the ice
and it shrieked out loud
and then you hollared thrice
"Dude, you wrecked my truck! . . . "

At 4 AM the cell phone rang again
it was the boss saying we gotta come in
how much sooner or longer will it be?
Did you get my call at quarter past three?

In twenty minutes he was calling again
You said what's his problem, he's been phoning it in.

At 3 Am

Somethings never change
nothing need stay the same
ah, but on a website
the constant change
 is kind-of the point . . .

change without continuity and tradition is often very hard to manage for those thrust into it. And thus the frame of things gives a place for the change to happen. If you violate that idea then you are coming up with something completely different and maybe no one will want to see your new idea, or use your great, new venue, because it's too far out, and very far away from what they currently care about. It's a nether or a meta and it's merely for a lark? Or does it become the next big thing? As fun as graphics are (CGI) and animation, and making a world to fly around in (like minetest, which is easy when you learn how) ultimately such a meta is a hollow place. It's a distraction during the season of gaming. It allows one to brush up on geometry and math, and architectural design, it gives people training in computer languages, it allows someone to make some graphical ideas, and pass a few hours of time every few days or so . . .

To live within such a realm really isn't possible.

Poem Shards

just who reads, who writes these poems?
off a mountain road the poet roams
but only in a poem.

Realizing that the empty
is empty
and not needing anything there.

just who shows up and for what?
I'm lonely or am alone or what does it matter?
driving off towards the nothing
walking along the nowhere path
up high
sure, it's a pretty view
but seen it, done it, jaded, back to the air port
he flew
his fantasy of happy vacation was through.

The deep snow.

The deep snow. She doesn't know how deep. She didn't think about it. Depth of snow no one know in rills and hollows where you shouldn't go when the storm is fierce and the night is cold even you shouldn't be so bold. poem is from 2012 short story titled Blizzard Baby The morning light is hued in cold awareness. Warming in the sun the bunny explores the snow covered lawn. The tracks melt by mid morning. Bunny doesn't know what the song means, anyway. This giant bubble that we call awareness? How could it have been formed? Coders Edge

served to you by:

Fedora Core 38 beta

Ya, I decided to load Fedora Core 38 Beta about a month ago, and this machine kept shutting down . . . I think I finally fixed it. Tomorrow is the big release day for the Fedora Core 38. My production workstation is still running FC37. I don't know if I'll jump right on it right away. . .

my server is still resetting, or maybe I have it fixed. I decided to just remove plasma-desktop, as I don't use it. The journals were giving all kinds of errors with that, and I think that might have been the issue, conflicting with the gdm that I do use. Worst case I'd just go to runlevel 3 but, as I said in another column, I don't really even know if anyone views these pages anyway.

My production box would upgrade but the dnf says it would downgrade grum and associated tools, and that's never a good thing to do. I'm just not going to do it! anyway I'll check tomorrow when the offical release is and probably do it then. If I'm in the mood.

So now I've run every version of Fedora serving this website! that's a long time.

here is from a year ago:

Fedora Core 36 beta

It took some time to figure out how to defeat the new screensaver built in, but I was able to. It's the biggest downside to the new Gnome.

I set the keybindings to something I don't use, and then put in a custom keybinding to use the old tool.

There are other minor things that annoy too, like the restoration of a deleted file that I always have to delete again on every FC core upgrade. The file is name camera-shutte.oga. It's in /usr/share/sounds/freedesktop/stereo

At the precipice of coding.

a mountain trail often has a place with a great view and a perilous fall if you wonder just a bit too far to one side of the trail. It's called a precipice. It's not a scary place. It's a safe place that one passes through.

OK, so I've done an update to FC34.

the biggest issue was . . . . drum roll . . .a lock up of gnome.

and if i clicked on the activities button I would need to reload (log out log back in).

I was able to run stuff without that, and thus determined a list of files that might need to be removed. I did as full reinstall of gnome as such:

dnf reinstall gnome

then I did a

dnf list installed |grep fc33

which gave me a list of files to consider uninstalling.

from that I got the following:

first odd issue:

sudo was not at first working! I had to install it! I kept the configuration file so I have my preferences still set up.

dnf install sudo dnf reinstall gnome-* dnf reinstall kde* dnf reinstall NetworkManager* dnf remove gnome-screensaver dnf remove gnome-shell-extension-desktop-icons-20.04.0-2.fc33.noarch dnf remove xorg-x11-xkb-extras-7.7-33.fc33.x86_64 dnf remove compat-openssl10-1:1.0.2o-11.fc33.x86_64 dnf remove mozjs60-60.9.0-7.fc33.x86_64

there are still some fc33 packages, (I also looked for fc32 packages, anything older that was gnome)

sudo dnf list installed |grep fc33
biber.noarch 2.14-4.fc33 @fedora
gamin.x86_64 0.1.10-37.fc33 @fedora
libgta.x86_64 1.0.9-5.fc33 @fedora

if removing a package also removed large numbers of other packages, I left it. For each of the few that I did remove, I always would make sure by reading what would happen before agreeing to the transaction.

now the gnome-shell is working and it doesn't lock up. So which of the packages that I removed made the difference? I am not sure.

and so after just a few short hours of install, I've got my system working in away that seems normal.

the new gnome shell moves the icons to the bottom of the screen.

I find gnome-shell to be annoyingly poppy at times. I tend to do things rapidly, and all the popping can be nauseating.

It is helpful to learn how to use dnf. I've found that the reverse history stuff works as long as you haven't made too many changes. It's a dicey, though, to try and go back to an older revision but I did it ONCE. Next time it didn't work out so well. AT that point it was installing dnf and yum from rpms.

and I had success. It's the kind of thing that when you know how to do it . . .

but there was one other trick that I needed and it was a scary way to reset a password and I did discover how to do it. I'm not sharing that one (barely remember) it's like these things exist in a nether, and it's best to . . . let the knowledge fade unless you need it. It's too scary to dwell in that space.

anyway, gnome shell is working. It's not flighty and hanging up. And all it took was to remove the old packages of gnome that might conflict with it. And now I can continue with my review.
