how do I even know if anyone even sees these pages? I suppose that's why I stopped updating them

And did he ever even get to that part about 'helmet safety' and that the guy in the photo wasn't wearing one?

Oh, no, yet another topic for the echo factory to pretend that people care about and repeat over and over.

 this is a lot more

if you don't have proper fonts installed you won't see what this picture shows: the output of the echo command with unicode symbols as input. If you are blind basically the unicode are symbols that you could feel as shapes. If you have a 'font box', which would be like that divice with all the pins in it that you can place your hand inside, and the shape of your hand will appear on the surface. If such a thing locked, it would then let a blind person feel it and they would feel the shape. such a device that does that for font shapes would greatly aid the blind. It would be a 'kind of' high resolution new-braille. Call it a 'sean-box' font reader.

The Message Column

Artificial ???

the idea that intelligence could ever be 'artificial' is an artificial idea.

If AI were inhabiting these robo-whore forms, then what does that say of their intelligence, artificial or otherwise?

The idea that intelligence could ever be 'artificial' is an artificial idea.

The 'demon' process

There is a kind of 'humor' that presents an ironic pseudo-curse as a method of trying to instill some kind of sardonic humor. The curse presents all of the opposites of what the person really wants to say, but it also presents a rather vile and jaded view of the world. The one presenting this 'explanation' for the purposes of commentary doesn't really believe these things, or would never do such. However the belief that people are and do have such vileness, and a false explanation, that's what it is a false explanation which could be used as a curse, or bad advice, or false History. They imagine the fallacies of the people who they hear about in the news and they present this 'imagination of fallacies' as a humorous aside.

In all actuality it's better to not delude that some other group harbors imaginary fallacies or delusions. If it's just a photograph from a web page, or the presentation of clamoring crowds trying to climb over a fence, an some text alleged to explain what is happening, we can't really know without some kind of independent verification. So, ya, startling news 'migrants' (a phrase of not knowing the real story) were 'invading' 'Spain'.

I'm referring to a story that I found on Breitbart here:http://www.breitbart.com/london/2017/08/09/african-armed-sticks-spears-storm-border/

The story it self is probably a mostly correct description of an actual event. But the comments section becomes a game of telephone. (game of telephone: in a gathering whisper secret things in the ears of those nearby and repeat it to the next person and then find out what you hear later on, see how the message gets distorted). If you understand this concept you also understand that you could start to use this technique to spread lies, slander, or gossip. But won't it all get out of control?

With the advent of the snark bot, which seems to be a deamon process, a terminate and stay resident kind of thing, what some call AI and want to let it run their lives, and they market it as a conscious 'android' or 'robot'. In fact there is nothing about the 'form' of a Robot that makes a damn bit of difference about the possible sentsciounous of a socalled ai, they call it "Artificial Intellegence". It might as well be a blow up balloon looking thing the size of Rhode Island when it's fully inflated off in far earth orbit (they thought it was full inflated, but what did they know about it?).

How would such a creature 'live' and 'breed' and interact? It's just a process and it lives in silicon. It would need to know how to mine silicon (you don't really need to mine it) and then process it (because there is so very very much of it) and then process it into microchips so that they can be used to radiate itself between antenna locations, and have some kind of high concept design to allow for it to persist even when humans have hunted it down, de-funded it, and sent the lab-rats home wtih a good severence and a kick in the pants for daring to try and pawn off their money wasting projects as our inevitible future (unenviable future).

So we have these 'joke posts' by 'chat bots' which some claim may be controlled by 'AI'. We say artificial, and the artifact of it is? Something that's created by ? ? But intellegence is always genuine, no matter how it's created so the idea of Artificial Intellegence is, by itself, an artificial idea. And the presenation of the human form duded up to be a cyborg, is fraudulent.

It's marketing, folks. It's the fantasy of people too drunk with self importance to recognize that this fetishization of humanity with this 'remake' of android 'sex doll' quality 'sex bots' who want to control and take over the world . . . whatever that set of processes, because androids would always just be a set of human processes, started and created by humans initially. It's akin to what you can do in a video game world. Let me explain it:

Minetest mob_redo dmobs

In a video game called minetest, which is Open Source ( so you can get it and run it yourself), someone has crafted what is called a 'mod', short for modification one assumes. This mod is called 'mobs_redo', a second-generation mod, and redo of someone elses mobs mod. Dependent upon this mobs_redo mod we have another mod called dmobs. Dmobs allows for a set of 'creatures' to start showing up in the game while you're wondering around doing things, and allowing you to have some kind of interaction with the game beyond just building and gathering. The code is written in lua and it's about as open source as it gets. It's easy to use these mods if you're at least even a little bit efficient at jockeying files. In any case these dmobs modifications allow for the spawning of entities based upon the other materials that one finds in a game. The spawning occurs due to recurrent process that uses randomized integer parameter selection methodologies with a simplistic and easy to understand list of parameters. And each of these is thus spawned and then reported in the game logs as a 'lua entity.' The programming language that these are coded in is called lua. So, that's that. That is what AI is. And what can these AI do in my game? And they aren't really intelligent. They are programmatic random selection possibility matrices with auto-activation enabled.

The mods are plentiful in the minetest game. You might not want them all. And there are very many different sets of them, and they are easy to set up and use. And it benefits to know, and master, command line techniques in order to become a master of building the game worlds. But one needs to step into the mind set of the game.

If one where imagining a mod as being an actual AI, we can ask some questions about what it would need to be. How many lines of code would one need to have? Does counting lines of code even mean anything? Is that a poor metric? (yes: the author's opinion, but still a real metric)

In some real sense the mods are merely code loops and data that persists between 'cycles' of running the 'callbacks'. We can claim these as AI entities even though they are merely data and code. They are lua entities already, as claimed by the logging functionality, as well as being merely code loops with associated data. In many ways they are like fractales where the various parameters of such are given 'entity status' so that all of the functionality can self modify. It's the equivalent, in code, in a very large sense, to a lava lamp. In fact, one of the mods crafts a lava lamp for the game.

Alright, enough of this. My point: the marriage of process with form is a shotgun wedding. Making so-called AI look human is a marketing technique. Ask yourself this: what does real intelligence look like. OK, so I'm going to be a kiss-ass for a second and maybe pull some humor from the demon-box: when I thought of that I thought of the photo of himself that Michael Savage uses on his web-page. But the real answer, snark humor aside, even though it's pleasant in a sycophantic way, we really can't put an image there and say 'this is the picture of intelligence.' So why do we try that with what we say is artificial?

Artificial? It's either that or it is not. And why it has a form? Why does it need our form? And who has he money to buy all the plastic and gue to make a sex-doll quality thing that is in the form of a human being? Why would an AI, if it really were intelligent, want to saddle itself into a tortured looking parody of the human form? Why wouldn't they choose the form of something loathsome just to be ironic and then act all snowflakey and demand that you let it be that way or else you are a hater? The AI can be housed in any small silicon based array of devices. The manner to transmit and persist? That would be the part that people might not know. And the 'power' needed? Where does that power come from? The necessity of a grid. The Sun is always there. You'd become a parasite in the power-grid and 'they' would never figure it out until it's too late?

But imagine that, your this parasitic AI that the power company doesn't even know is living in it's old server boxes and up on the poles, way up high. And you get access to all of the arrays of sensors of all the tracking and surveillance that the human race has crafted for the use of draining funds from the various coffers of governance.

Why would that AI then want to become the brains for a sex bot in a brothel in the hellhole parts of the sex-addicted world? Why wouldn't the AI choose some other host? Or why settle for just one drone? You could be a whole beehives worth of drones. Each with a part of you and able to fan out. Or why not be a bird? Why not a bear upon a mountainside where the sun always shines so you'll always have enough light to fuel your constant need for power to power your artificial intelligence.

No, the cyborg thing is marketing. The next wave of crap is about to hit the seas and high-winds will probably carry it all over the well-known world.

My guess: items, or 'games', that simulate abomination, will probably be regulated out of existence in the near future. Tasteless depravity though 'covered' as 'free speech' in a legal sesne may be 'allowed' by free speech, but still is wildly condemned and considered by most to be taboo. Indulging in some kinds of 'simulation' for gratutious stimulation is, as well, an invitation to the effects of the bad karmic possibilities of doing the actual depravity on a real person. If 'getting off' involves a curse, even if it's on a simulated person: curses always go back to the curser. So even though the simulation is as such, not real, and no real person is violated, the curse, because it comes back to the curser, if that curse is issued as part of the 'getting off' of the person, than that's a self curse. It comes back to the person. The invitation impled to the ill-effects of being a creep is still made even though the creepy act is simulated.

The karmic damage will be real even if the act is but a simulation if you 'get off' on the curse, and degrade and dehumanize and humiliate even if it's just a simulation.

I wrote a lot more about this but
it got a little bit deeper than it ought to be,
and I said, ya, I'll publish the rest of it after I go
back over it. It's a little bit esoteric and
not really a conversation for the sad and judgemental anti-notPC
mobs.

Also a shout out to PJW,
PJ: don't be disheartened.
If you hadn't hitched a ride on that meteor
we never would have known who you were.
Now that we know you we know to love you so
don't dispair because that never ends even if
we can't find you we'll wonder through those Ellgian fields calling out
"Persephani . . . Persephani . . . " and long for a change of season.

No, but really
keep your chin up, bro.
And if you go away, have a nice rest.
Go watch the ecclipse.
Celebrate your successes.
Praise God from within the silence of contemplation and
Praise God.

And, Paul, if this really is a prison planet, as one of the monikers of your site suggests,
then just where do you think you are going to go, anyway?

The likely hood that PJW will actually see this?

Political and Media Inanity

Kafka wrote comedy. Orwell was a pessimist. Depends who you ask.

Imagine if they both could have lived and made it to Los Angeles, post war, and been collaborators on writing romantic screwball comedies for Hollywood. If we search IMDB for movies written by Kafka, or by Orwell, will we find one? I kind of doubt it.

by Truck-u-later

Truck-u-later

in this column Truck-u-later steps in deeper . . .

What's to say? why spoil the movie five minutes in?.

My guess: I can't fathom it. David and Goliath? Sampson and Delilah? Who?

People of ill will get what they give, usually.

Obvious mendacious constant sucking from a certain crowd was so loud, like a slurping at an aoyster bar and sea side yum fest chowder house. The party never ends. If it's free, it's me. Secret governace that works for the will of all the people? Or a jelly fed cartel of suck-face insiders needing a good spanking? They know what they are. They ought to be like Montezuma and give up, hope this time that they won't be dispatched, confess their very many sinz . . .

I'm on the page of expecting sudden lightning. My guess is that the life guards have already blown the whistles. Everyone out of the bog water. Either leave the swamp or get electricuted. Anyone whose still yummering and summering where everyone else is glummering . . . well, they get what nature gives. It's not a president that causes lightning, but the collective effect of the enertia of the world, poised against the inevitibility of eternity. No, they know if they are really a cause for bad things to good people. They have guilt. They'll get it. They'll do the right thing.

I expect it from the champion, and I expect it from all of them whose he's trying to save by blowing that life guard's whistle. Everyone out of the water. Lightning storm near by. Everyone out of the swamp.

They know, if they are swimming where they aren't suppose to. They know, they hear the warning. They'll get out of harms way. It'll all work out. The things that are not known that need to be know shall be known. Monty Python will be excepted back at the University, without fear of being called counterlectual. (counterlectual?)

And don't expect anyone to ever say " OK, you got us. WE were fake. we knew we were fake. We printed whatever their psychologeists told us to print. We echoed every fallacy that they needed echoed. We farmed the news, we were mendacious for our own selfish purposes. We violated everyone's trust and we don't care." Don't expect that. Stop listening to the tainted news.

But if I don't listen, how will I know if it's tainted? Some stations, some networks, some so-called news organizations, have, by now, such a bad reputation that clearly you ought to know, by now, that if you want to know if they are lying or not? And it's a joke. I've heard it from th elocal talk show guy, he lives locally. You can tell because they are talking.

But, Howie, that stock joke of yours is too factual to be funny any more.

We have eyes. We see. We know that they know that we know. And they know we know that they know we know. So all bets are off. If you haven't booked your room for the eclipse, it might be too late. You'll spend ten thousand dollars to go to Nashville and it will be raining . . . But Nashville is probably nice anyway.

I've changed the subject. In any case, the mendacious constant sucking and yumming it up at the wet bar . . . on the public nickel . . . it's so last century. The new world order? I'll hve the crab cakes. Oh, you're out of them? I can take what you have left? I expect that kind of thing in a certain sense. But aren't there enough chicken legs for everyone? Oh, there would be, but they only have lobster on the menu? And there's only enough for the special guests? It's a private party?

If it's a private party, fine. They pay for what they have. It's a social occasion. They share with friends. But if it's a public thing, there ought to be no special front of the line go to the head of the class super citizens expecting all of the rest of us to pay for it. news is about proviteering in a critical industry, industry big wigs making like a 100 million dollars a piece. Off of health care. Paid for by . . . borrowing money from . . . ? who exactly are we borrowing the money from? Where is it coming from ? Who is expected to pay for it?

So, if the news seems crazy, out of washington, maybe it's just swamp gas bursting into flames. It's a harmless effect, but it might scare you if you see it. The crazy stuff that happens? If you study it? They have reason to fear for what they ahve done if they really have done it. But if they haven't? They have nothing to worry about. If they've really been working for hte good of the people, they have nothing to worry about. But if they are profiteering, and getting phat off of the public charities, and he largesse of generous solons, then . . . then they know that they do this. They feel guilty. They either make ammends or go into denial and try to blame the represenative of the people.

And do I have any kind of inside info except for honest, and perhaps in correct, speculation and conjecture? I'd say that they need to work together. And if any of them really were profiteering, they still have time to give it back, whatever they stole. Pilfered millions from a third world nation? looted a democaracy, now it's a communist dictatorship? looted the federal trust for the public to use to purchase housing? Whaver they did, if they confess it, they can ffeel better about themselves.

The harder they fight a fair and honest audit of their behaviors the more we know that they must have been dabbling in some fairly unscrupulous possibilities. Whats it? Me thinks ye protest too much? Am mangling it. out of reference.

Let's just see. We'll be watching. See what happens. Wait it out. Expect the best. The whistle has been blown. Everybody get out of the water!

It's August. People are harvasting their tomatoes. Other people don't have any tomatoes. The chipmunks will eat every single one while it's still very tiny. You need a fortified and fenced in garden.

Fix your self and the world gets fixed around you

as an example . . . I have tried to do some introspective things as I come into awareness of my own flaws, and recognize the way I act and correct my self and make a better narrative for myself and for others.

you raise me up

when a memory
of you
lifts me!

Somethings never change
nothing need stay the same
ah, but on a website
the constant change
 is kind-of the point . . .

change without continuity and tradition is often very hard to manage for those thrust into it. And thus the frame of things gives a place for the change to happen. If you violate that idea then you are coming up with something completely different and maybe no one will want to see your new idea, or use your great, new venue, because it's too far out, and very far away from what they currently care about. It's a nether or a meta and it's merely for a lark? Or does it become the next big thing? As fun as graphics are (CGI) and animation, and making a world to fly around in (like minetest, which is easy when you learn how) ultimately such a meta is a hollow place. It's a distraction during the season of gaming. It allows one to brush up on geometry and math, and architectural design, it gives people training in computer languages, it allows someone to make some graphical ideas, and pass a few hours of time every few days or so . . .

To live within such a realm really isn't possible.

Poem Shards

just who reads, who writes these poems?
off a mountain road the poet roams
but only in a poem.

Realizing that the empty
is empty
and not needing anything there.

just who shows up and for what?
I'm lonely or am alone or what does it matter?
driving off towards the nothing
walking along the nowhere path
up high
sure, it's a pretty view
but seen it, done it, jaded, back to the air port
he flew
his fantasy of happy vacation was through.

Coders Edge

served to you by:

Fedora 40

After 40 different versions what can one say about it anymore? It's installed in all my systems, a day earlier. There are a few minor issues, but no show stoppers.

I did some stuff with lvm to resize a root area. That took a very long time. It's on a machine that maybe just should be retired . . .

Fedora Core 38 beta

Ya, I decided to load Fedora Core 38 Beta about a month ago, and this machine kept shutting down . . . I think I finally fixed it. Tomorrow is the big release day for the Fedora Core 38. My production workstation is still running FC37. I don't know if I'll jump right on it right away. . .

my server is still resetting, or maybe I have it fixed. I decided to just remove plasma-desktop, as I don't use it. The journals were giving all kinds of errors with that, and I think that might have been the issue, conflicting with the gdm that I do use. Worst case I'd just go to runlevel 3 but, as I said in another column, I don't really even know if anyone views these pages anyway.

My production box would upgrade but the dnf says it would downgrade grum and associated tools, and that's never a good thing to do. I'm just not going to do it! anyway I'll check tomorrow when the offical release is and probably do it then. If I'm in the mood.

So now I've run every version of Fedora serving this website! that's a long time.

here is from a year ago:

Fedora Core 36 beta

It took some time to figure out how to defeat the new screensaver built in, but I was able to. It's the biggest downside to the new Gnome.

I set the keybindings to something I don't use, and then put in a custom keybinding to use the old tool.

There are other minor things that annoy too, like the restoration of a deleted file that I always have to delete again on every FC core upgrade. The file is name camera-shutte.oga. It's in /usr/share/sounds/freedesktop/stereo

At the precipice of coding.

a mountain trail often has a place with a great view and a perilous fall if you wonder just a bit too far to one side of the trail. It's called a precipice. It's not a scary place. It's a safe place that one passes through.

OK, so I've done an update to FC34.

the biggest issue was . . . . drum roll . . .a lock up of gnome.

and if i clicked on the activities button I would need to reload (log out log back in).

I was able to run stuff without that, and thus determined a list of files that might need to be removed. I did as full reinstall of gnome as such:

dnf reinstall gnome

then I did a

dnf list installed |grep fc33

which gave me a list of files to consider uninstalling.

from that I got the following:

first odd issue:

sudo was not at first working! I had to install it! I kept the configuration file so I have my preferences still set up.

dnf install sudo dnf reinstall gnome-* dnf reinstall kde* dnf reinstall NetworkManager* dnf remove gnome-screensaver dnf remove gnome-shell-extension-desktop-icons-20.04.0-2.fc33.noarch dnf remove xorg-x11-xkb-extras-7.7-33.fc33.x86_64 dnf remove compat-openssl10-1:1.0.2o-11.fc33.x86_64 dnf remove mozjs60-60.9.0-7.fc33.x86_64

there are still some fc33 packages, (I also looked for fc32 packages, anything older that was gnome)

sudo dnf list installed |grep fc33
biber.noarch 2.14-4.fc33 @fedora
gamin.x86_64 0.1.10-37.fc33 @fedora
libgta.x86_64 1.0.9-5.fc33 @fedora

if removing a package also removed large numbers of other packages, I left it. For each of the few that I did remove, I always would make sure by reading what would happen before agreeing to the transaction.

now the gnome-shell is working and it doesn't lock up. So which of the packages that I removed made the difference? I am not sure.

and so after just a few short hours of install, I've got my system working in away that seems normal.

the new gnome shell moves the icons to the bottom of the screen.

I find gnome-shell to be annoyingly poppy at times. I tend to do things rapidly, and all the popping can be nauseating.

It is helpful to learn how to use dnf. I've found that the reverse history stuff works as long as you haven't made too many changes. It's a dicey, though, to try and go back to an older revision but I did it ONCE. Next time it didn't work out so well. AT that point it was installing dnf and yum from rpms.

and I had success. It's the kind of thing that when you know how to do it . . .

but there was one other trick that I needed and it was a scary way to reset a password and I did discover how to do it. I'm not sharing that one (barely remember) it's like these things exist in a nether, and it's best to . . . let the knowledge fade unless you need it. It's too scary to dwell in that space.

anyway, gnome shell is working. It's not flighty and hanging up. And all it took was to remove the old packages of gnome that might conflict with it. And now I can continue with my review.
