how do I even know if anyone even sees these pages? I suppose that's why I stopped updating them

And did he ever even get to that part about 'helmet safety' and that the guy in the photo wasn't wearing one?

Oh, no, yet another topic for the echo factory to pretend that people care about and repeat over and over.

 this is a lot more
             fun
         than wading
         in through the chan spam.

if you don't have proper fonts installed you won't see what this picture shows: the output of the echo command with unicode symbols as input. If you are blind basically the unicode are symbols that you could feel as shapes. If you have a 'font box', which would be like that divice with all the pins in it that you can place your hand inside, and the shape of your hand will appear on the surface. If such a thing locked, it would then let a blind person feel it and they would feel the shape. such a device that does that for font shapes would greatly aid the blind. It would be a 'kind of' high resolution new-braille. Call it a 'sean-box' font reader.

breathless

War Policies

A 'strike' with million dollar missles (they cost more than that . . . doesn't make good headlines.

We can't know what he knows. He knows what he doesn't know. It's not just one man making such a decision.

We all know that war time brings on other considerations. This nation was almost a dictatorship during WWII. Survival is a neccessary thing. We can take time, on occasion, to pay respect to those who passed before, and in a situation that didn't augment their families, but did result in gathering. First, they gather the bodies. Then they gather in a place to identify the bodies. And then they have a service, after gathering with a bugle corp to pay respect. They pass a coffin to the family.

Then the family gathers. They need to gather together their sanity, and hopefully not loose it during the ceremonies.

Mr. Kennedy allowed the Bay of Pigs fiasco. After that it was always hung around his neck as a great failure. Many have said . . . let me not repeat that of which I am not an expert. In any case, that event is worth reviewing in light of what has happened, in the Syrian War, this day just past; and the expenditure of armanance, unleashed and clearly not borne by any individual. From the manufacturers, who funded the engineers; from the engineers, who designed it; and the technicians and mechinists, who crafted it; from the ones who fueled it; to the ones who carried it off to the naval vessal, all the way into the cargo hold; and then the procedures were crafted (actually it's part of the process) to 'deploy' this instrument of warfare. Who is at fault in any of it? One person? All of them?Just the head person? Not the ones who say 'here is our loaded pistol, and now we sugget you point it at this air base and pull the trigger'? The loaded pistol was 51 missles. Using 51 missles to destroy and air base is a very serious use of force, and a clear escalation of the situation. No appologies? Nothing to say now? There is plenty to say. And instead of words sometimes people use other methods to express and communicate their feelings. In this case the message in Syria was conveyed by cratering an air base.

So many are sure that this event, that made some delude to necessitate an ordinance event of world wide significance; they would not say 'delude', but 'conclude; the event of the poison gas attack, so many are sure; like Rand Paul, or Scott Adams, have expressed; that they do not believe that the head of Syria would use gas, saying it doesn’t make sense. They say that Assad did not . . . do what the others are 'sure' he did. They call this poison gas attack an eff-eff event. (but I abreviate to less obviated, but why?)

If Mr. Trump was fooled by an eff-eff, and that gas attack was originated in other quarters (some say it was . . . but why spread even more rumors, so I won't repeat it, I'm sure anyone reading this already knows the story); if Mr. Trump was fooled . . . so now a Syrian Air base is out of commission for a while . . . (upon morning edit, because this didn’t get posted yesterday when I wrote this, it’s reported that the base was not rendered useless). And a bunch of people are dead. (reports are of five casulties). And a blood fued escalates. How do we fix these procedural methodologies when it seems that so many have a vested interest to keep the methodologies of limited-controlled-response diplomacy broken? May the reader please note that by ‘limited-controlled-response diplomacy’ I mean the type of activity where a measured use of force conveys a military and diplomatic message.

This strike must be owned by the team that initiated it. If they made a mistake . . . they own it.

The arguement has often been made that any use of terror weapons, and unmanned instruments of war, such as bombing from a bomber, or missles, or kill-bot drones, many have made the argument that any use of such is a . . . and needs to be prosecuted. But in the real world . . . people know that nations often go to war, that some groups, or moieties, are always discontented and always on the march to go and plunder and pillage. Millitant societies tend to often overturn the settled order. And that envy and jealosy, and lust for power, compell some to craft narratives of 'privledge' and 'blame', as a way to scare up support for their elections as a legislators. We have a lot of people who want more more more, and they don't stop at the borders.

Yes, this sucks. If the gas attack originated elsewhere, we made a grevious mistake by destroying an air-base.

We are, and have been, at a world-war stance in very many parts of the world for the last 16 years. The real combatents, and who the real commanders are, has never been clear. What is clear is that the level of funding necessary to maintain a private army means that it isn't just a bunch of rag-tags who are this 'army' called by a name that falsely associates them with a religious persuasion. They must have some means of support, some infrastructure. There must be well-funded entities, and capitulators to that cause who fund them and support them.

And in this world of double dealing back-stab, there never seems to be any reform. And anyone who ever gets in and says that they are going to reform gets duped; acts like a . . . and stands down, letting the old-world facists go on a rampage and do horrible things in their nations, meanwhile the usual suspects profiteer off of it, driving nations into insolvency in the process. Go to a beach and see all the pepole who live there for free and roast in the sun. Some of them are profiteers off of wars and guns too. Can't you see that it's most of the fricky world? And anyone who is 'safe' is 'safe' because the bastards, of the old-world moieties, who delude to 'rule' their 'people' or 'the brotherhood' alledgedly of some group or religion, and want everyone else in the world to follow along or die as an apostate or a heritic, or a pagan, we are faced with execution and death if we don't at least pretend that at some point there has to be consequences for misbehaving, raping and pillaging in the name of anything. Without consequences it just gets worse. But are cruise missles ever a good idea?

I want to say never. That's why I could never be on the National Security Council. It might be a job illsuited for a publisher, who wants everyone to get along, and who believes that ideas save people, not bombs. Unfortunately sometimes the correct thing to do is act boldly. Or is that not unfortunate. The acccusation of 'eff eff' for the gas attack is a serious one, and ought not be just poo-poo'd, as the last adminstration would have done.

In years past, before some in The United States thought that we were the police men of the world, there would be horrible horrible things that would happen to populations in the Old World, and we wouldn't ever hear of most of it. How is it that the United States became the policeman of the world? Why should we continue doing this, with all of bad karma associated with it, and all the ill that comes from dropping bombs? The old administration seemed to revell in the idea of all that power, but still used the rethoric of antiwar to smeer and malaign this country. It seemed that they were hoping to cede power to the UN and then run that too, but saddling this nation with all the dept to pay to prop it all up. (is a theory as conjecture, just how it seems).

If there is a sheriff, and everyone expects that sheriff to do what is necessary to maintain order, and if that sheriff negates the obligations of the office, then situations devolve.

Walking away from Iraq after we became the only-sheriff-in-town was a very bad idea. Even if we should never have gone in there in the first place, once we were there the obligation of being the law enforcers lay upon the office of the President (of the USA). It was either malicious, or naive, of the last administration to walk away from Iraq and leave it all to rot. But we can't blame the last administration for what happened in Syria this week. Sorry. It's not their fault about that.

April 8, 2017

I'm not doing this because I would have chosen this trail throught these bryars, but here we are and we need to proceed to a more fortunate location. But sheriff, he's a dangerous man . . .

if you can does not mean that you do.

A friend passed away,
he knew a famous rockstar.
It was a long time ago
before any of them were famous.
and now, upon the death of the friend,
who was truly a friend to all,
one of the most magnaminous of all
there is to be a concert and some kind
of fund raising tribute and . . .
famous rock star guy isn't sure that he
can attend.
name dropped. I won't repeat it here.

I told my other friend that
if famous rock star guy were to show
up at a music festival and
with his guitar stuff
to play his famous songs,
then don't you think that they
gotta keep it on the down-low?

But I thought about it a little more.
Someone we all love died. So now
why do we expect that anyone
even famous rockstar,
would be in any mood
for an outdoor show
on a windy day
by the water
for a 'cause' that we
already gave to anyway
in so very very many ways.

We all mourn in different ways.
Expectations get placed upon the way,
the yellow rose means something that you have to do
as well . . .
the desk in the hallway
that old green vase
and pictures of old friends
who you will never see again
with writing on the back of them.

It's just a lot more that phrases and sounds
and the clanging of thrashing metal
guitars like a mosh pit
at he prime-eval moment of conception
into that . . . place of emergence
if you go in you
never come out the same
but that's life all around.

Some moments seem longer than others
the expecation of doing somethign great
for other people
and always being didactic
about the joy of living.
that dream you had was
never more than just a story
for you to use as a guide.
You could not perscribe
how the love would flow
in your river of love
but the expectation
that water flows like it does
and forms as it does
so in Rock songs love
is often coveyed as water,
or the rain,
as it's said in a famous ballad
by a famous guitarist (not the one who knew my friend).

So if famous rockstar
guitar gawd guy
with the giant poster
posing with his ear ring
larger than life
at the guitar store up the highway
can't make it to the outdoor show in the cold rain . . .
becuase he's too involved
with what he's involved with . . .
why should anyone say anything
either way,
up down,
the chords to his song are very complex
he has a very beautiful voice
they were all equally as talented,
one group of brothers
got the better brake.
They were all friends,
and brothers
and brothers of friends.
Your sister, your mother, your elderly aunt. (ant)
some times people do
even when they'd said that they can't. (cawn't?)

Why worry about things that you can't control?
Maybe just to get out of the way and
 live through it?
 sounds right.
 I'm so decisive.

Political and Media Inanity

Kafka wrote comedy. Orwell was a pessimist. Depends who you ask.

Imagine if they both could have lived and made it to Los Angeles, post war, and been collaborators on writing romantic screwball comedies for Hollywood. If we search IMDB for movies written by Kafka, or by Orwell, will we find one? I kind of doubt it.

by Truck-u-later

Truck-u-later

in this column Truck-u-later steps in deeper . . .

We all know you've been watching me. I saw how you looked at me . . .

So let's review: the people calling in the hate-stuff to the . . . .were . . . themselves.

I was sure that 'technically' they thought that they had our president, when he did his furious accusatory 3 AM tweet. honestly, I said 'wiretap'? Doesn't he know that they are using IPV6 and no actual wire needs to be tapped. But I understood that he meant it in the general way of a 'wiretap' as a thing, not as a description of the actual activity. Ie: there is no wire so how is it ever a 'wiretap' anymore?

That's all just a technicallity and we all know that. All in all Donald is being Donald and I'm glad for him but I worry that it's a little bit overwhelming for him. He needs to remember that Republican's are only some of the people who voted for him. And I'm sure that he does.

It's been my contention that he mirrors back-at-chas to people. And so if they are nasty he seems nasty.

It was insightful to me to see a roast of Mr. Trump from many years ago and to see a certain wellknown, if not photogenic, shock jock personality (I won't name him) leaning over in a loving glazed up love lock on our beloved president and Donald just soaking it all up. Yes, Donald is well-loved by the people who love him.

It's too bad that Paul Ryan is still in charge at the House. It would be better for all involved if they choose a better person. A consensus person, maybe not from either major party? Mr. Paul? Mr. Sanders? How about a coillition speakership?

Or rotating speakers. Wait, Bernie isn't a congressman so it can't be him. Pence should do the Senate, let Rand do the house.

As far as Nancy and Chuck go, Well, Chuck, we need you to cluck. A spirited opposition, and aauthentic outrage, give credance to the idea that we actually debate and choose the best path instead of it being group think, lemmings over the edge. Look at all the beached whales of the democrat party.

Paul Ryan, I think you should gather together your spirit of self sacriface and move on. Let someone more of the mind of swamp draining be the leader now.

 is kind-of the point . . .

change without continuity and tradition is often very hard to manage for those thrust into it. And thus the frame of things gives a place for the change to happen. If you violate that idea then you are coming up with something completely different and maybe no one will want to see your new idea, or use your great, new venue, because it's too far out, and very far away from what they currently care about. It's a nether or a meta and it's merely for a lark? Or does it become the next big thing? As fun as graphics are (CGI) and animation, and making a world to fly around in (like minetest, which is easy when you learn how) ultimately such a meta is a hollow place. It's a distraction during the season of gaming. It allows one to brush up on geometry and math, and architectural design, it gives people training in computer languages, it allows someone to make some graphical ideas, and pass a few hours of time every few days or so . . .

To live within such a realm really isn't possible.

Poem Shards

just who reads, who writes these poems?
off a mountain road the poet roams
but only in a poem.

Realizing that the empty
is empty
and not needing anything there.

just who shows up and for what?
I'm lonely or am alone or what does it matter?
driving off towards the nothing
walking along the nowhere path
up high
sure, it's a pretty view
but seen it, done it, jaded, back to the air port
he flew
his fantasy of happy vacation was through.

The deep snow.

The deep snow. She doesn't know how deep. She didn't think about it. Depth of snow no one know in rills and hollows where you shouldn't go when the storm is fierce and the night is cold even you shouldn't be so bold. poem is from 2012 short story titled Blizzard Baby The morning light is hued in cold awareness. Warming in the sun the bunny explores the snow covered lawn. The tracks melt by mid morning. Bunny doesn't know what the song means, anyway. This giant bubble that we call awareness? Coders Edge

served to you by:

Fedora Core 38 beta

Ya, I decided to load Fedora Core 38 Beta about a month ago, and this machine kept shutting down . . . I think I finally fixed it. Tomorrow is the big release day for the Fedora Core 38. My production workstation is still running FC37. I don't know if I'll jump right on it right away. . .

my server is still resetting, or maybe I have it fixed. I decided to just remove plasma-desktop, as I don't use it. The journals were giving all kinds of errors with that, and I think that might have been the issue, conflicting with the gdm that I do use. Worst case I'd just go to runlevel 3 but, as I said in another column, I don't really even know if anyone views these pages anyway.

My production box would upgrade but the dnf says it would downgrade grum and associated tools, and that's never a good thing to do. I'm just not going to do it! anyway I'll check tomorrow when the offical release is and probably do it then. If I'm in the mood.

So now I've run every version of Fedora serving this website! that's a long time.

here is from a year ago:

Fedora Core 36 beta

It took some time to figure out how to defeat the new screensaver built in, but I was able to. It's the biggest downside to the new Gnome.

I set the keybindings to something I don't use, and then put in a custom keybinding to use the old tool.

There are other minor things that annoy too, like the restoration of a deleted file that I always have to delete again on every FC core upgrade. The file is name camera-shutte.oga. It's in /usr/share/sounds/freedesktop/stereo

At the precipice of coding.

a mountain trail often has a place with a great view and a perilous fall if you wonder just a bit too far to one side of the trail. It's called a precipice. It's not a scary place. It's a safe place that one passes through.

OK, so I've done an update to FC34.

the biggest issue was . . . . drum roll . . .a lock up of gnome.

and if i clicked on the activities button I would need to reload (log out log back in).

I was able to run stuff without that, and thus determined a list of files that might need to be removed. I did as full reinstall of gnome as such:

dnf reinstall gnome

then I did a

dnf list installed |grep fc33

which gave me a list of files to consider uninstalling.

from that I got the following:

first odd issue:

sudo was not at first working! I had to install it! I kept the configuration file so I have my preferences still set up.

dnf install sudo dnf reinstall gnome-* dnf reinstall kde* dnf reinstall NetworkManager* dnf remove gnome-screensaver dnf remove gnome-shell-extension-desktop-icons-20.04.0-2.fc33.noarch dnf remove xorg-x11-xkb-extras-7.7-33.fc33.x86_64 dnf remove compat-openssl10-1:1.0.2o-11.fc33.x86_64 dnf remove mozjs60-60.9.0-7.fc33.x86_64

there are still some fc33 packages, (I also looked for fc32 packages, anything older that was gnome)

sudo dnf list installed |grep fc33
biber.noarch 2.14-4.fc33 @fedora
gamin.x86_64 0.1.10-37.fc33 @fedora
libgta.x86_64 1.0.9-5.fc33 @fedora

if removing a package also removed large numbers of other packages, I left it. For each of the few that I did remove, I always would make sure by reading what would happen before agreeing to the transaction.

now the gnome-shell is working and it doesn't lock up. So which of the packages that I removed made the difference? I am not sure.

and so after just a few short hours of install, I've got my system working in away that seems normal.

the new gnome shell moves the icons to the bottom of the screen.

I find gnome-shell to be annoyingly poppy at times. I tend to do things rapidly, and all the popping can be nauseating.

It is helpful to learn how to use dnf. I've found that the reverse history stuff works as long as you haven't made too many changes. It's a dicey, though, to try and go back to an older revision but I did it ONCE. Next time it didn't work out so well. AT that point it was installing dnf and yum from rpms.

and I had success. It's the kind of thing that when you know how to do it . . .

but there was one other trick that I needed and it was a scary way to reset a password and I did discover how to do it. I'm not sharing that one (barely remember) it's like these things exist in a nether, and it's best to . . . let the knowledge fade unless you need it. It's too scary to dwell in that space.

anyway, gnome shell is working. It's not flighty and hanging up. And all it took was to remove the old packages of gnome that might conflict with it. And now I can continue with my review.
