how do I even know if anyone even sees these pages? I suppose that's why I stopped updating them

And did he ever even get to that part about 'helmet safety' and that the guy in the photo wasn't wearing one?

Oh, no, yet another topic for the echo factory to pretend that people care about and repeat over and over.

 this is a lot more
             fun
         than wading
         in through the chan spam.

if you don't have proper fonts installed you won't see what this picture shows: the output of the echo command with unicode symbols as input. If you are blind basically the unicode are symbols that you could feel as shapes. If you have a 'font box', which would be like that divice with all the pins in it that you can place your hand inside, and the shape of your hand will appear on the surface. If such a thing locked, it would then let a blind person feel it and they would feel the shape. such a device that does that for font shapes would greatly aid the blind. It would be a 'kind of' high resolution new-braille. Call it a 'sean-box' font reader.

The Message Column

It's always not
3 A.M. somewhere.

Nuclear War?

Some times I ignore the incredulous news. Everyone knows that the nuclear option is a non-option.

Fortunately I studied Orwell to a point . . . of comprehension. Propaganda verses news? How to behave in a world flooded by the medacity of willfull ideology? Expect the best. Don't believe the worst. Even when it is given as news. Especially when it is what people are alledged to have said . . .

In Venezuela they let the public starve to keep the party in power. What do they do in the United States? Why are the powers that bleed so afraid of the idea of Hillary loosing? Why are they in full-scale freak out about Syria? Why is Syria so important?

The obvious answer is, of course, any place where people live is important. People are, of course, important. And there is alledged to be much war going on in Syria, alledged because . . .well what is news and do you believe it anymore? Well, so there is a war in Syria, and there are pepole being killed daily for . . . and no one has a real answer. Who started it? Why did it happen? Who supplied the 'rebel' weapons? What countries are trying to take over? What cause is it that is served if Syria becomes something different? And a world of thralls.

In Brazil, in Argentina, they deposed the old government that had gotten so corrupt and blatent in their self-dealing that even the liberal minded populations of those places went along with throwing the mavens of cause off of their thrones.

The news that 40 million people participated in a nuclear drill seems far fetched. I guess I don't really believe it. For what purpose? To try and sway the American election?

I've seen polls on line where the question is asked if [some candidate] wins will you suppot that candidate as president or still oppose that one?

We always have a right to disagree with leadership. And we always have a right to be political in our opposition. But we don't have a right to insurrection and we still have to follow the law and apply law equally to all people. And so, if someone is unlike that and gets into a high place of powerful authoriy, and they are 'above' the law, then I believe that most people, understanding and respecting the need for equal justice under the law, would feel righteous in saying that they would not support the above the law-ness of such a candidate were that one to be the 'winner'

Expect dissolution.

how to find Greta Van Susteren now

Where is greta now? She sitll owns one of the domain names and she has redireted it to a pet adoption web site. I have not found any new blog by her, though I haven't looked very hard.

Greta may have been purged from Faux Noose but her mug still shows up on their ap (at least it did a few days ago, I havne't gone their lately).

I took a picture of it. I'll post it here if I remember, but you get the idea.

Fair use for this Newsworthy image of the Fox News app as it shows up on a Sony branded media box, after she was purged from Fox News and their website.Fair use for Newsworthy image of Greta Van Susteren as she appears on the Fox News app on a Sony media player, Sept, 2016, after her being purged and deleted from other Fox News offerings.

how about an excerpt?

"Hello, this call is being monitored. Hello. Hello."

after a while, in a throathy voice 'yes.'

"You're back. you're back at the holterloam?"

"I assure you I have no clue."

"I know that. You were texting. Texting klexton."

"Klexton? You know where he is?"

"You have to take the Tinder trail. Up the side of the great big waterfall. He was seen lurking near the ledges, at the edge, teetering, like Kokopelli."

"How. . . did you get my number?"

"I've got your number, ya I do. Ha ha ha."

"You shouldn't be calling me here. I'm not supposed to have a phone in here."

"Honey, you got a phone up your . . . " the connection cuts, just briefly , oh those pesky censors ". . . and you don't even know it."

"I don't want to meet you. I told you I don't want to meet you."

"Honey, if you wanted to, I'd be dropping from the sky on a giant tether, from way on high, and you'd grab right on. You would grab right on and fly away with me. Off to the far away."

"I know where those flights go. I don't like Utah."

"Utah? How about Sunset Mountain Ocean Dessert?"

"SMOD?"

"No body calls it that."

"I can call it that."

"You're just . . . plagiarizing crap that you remember from sitcom episodes. Because if you do call it that no body is going to be, nobody is going to be, caring, at all, what f-in you f-in say. ("he put the 'f' in Effingham, if you go there, know who I am.")"

"You're ridiculous and you have to stop calling me."

And so Effertous, the guy who is on the woodland hike, finally fed up and out of control takes his cell phone and he hurls it off into the chasm, out into the fog, where it disappears. But it suddenly pops a umbilical, a para-shoot (ahh) deploys and suddenly the legs spread open, and it morphs itself into a basket, morphing as we see it. Of course it is just a cartoon. No real cell phone was ever thrown from a chasm and morphed into a balloon basket (complete with tiny little mock up furry mice, dressed as bride and groom, oh those sillies in the prop department (this part was little puppets)).

"Effertous" the phone says as it flies back to him. "You can't let go of this, this is your only link to the real world."

"Real world? Who says so?"

"Effertous, this is hardly a time for a discussion of the topic of Epistemology."

"He pissed them all off-ogy"

"Effertous. Capitulate."

And thus does the cartoon character go into a total rage, because capitulate was one of his trigger words and he lost control. But soon he's discovered that he is just a cartoon, some how, in the mayhem, and he starts drawing his own picture. The first thing: he builds a cage for the troublesome cellphone, which, in essence, is just a bird-akin-animated (by Fractacular, the robot puppet clown, and all of his troublesome minions (who live somewhere west of Colorado but East of Massachusetts, and you can't go over the date line?) Things in cartoons don't need to make sense in many ways.

The poison message must be prevented from giving it's mean effect: children need to be inoculated from hypnotic media.

aside: please note that there are many types of content. some of the content, essentially, in a cartoon, is obviously the motion. If the content is 'text' than one would like to be able to see that text without having it flying around on the screen like it can now (very easily) through the magic of browsers, markup and styles (oh my). In a cartoon, the purpose could be the 'waking up' of the aspect in a kid to not let him/her self be controlled by outside people. How would one present cartoons to children that don't just ululate, hypnotize, and then feed meanness and debauchery into their minds? The poison message must be prevented but how do we even know, or who is qualified to say, what that is? And the consequences if we get it wrong? Censorship? They'll just say it isn't for kids and the kids will want to watch it even more.

What is it that children need to learn? And would it be better to not socialize them with pablum from child-children minded who-ever-they-ares?

But we live in the real world. They say to trust. So trust we must. But who and what is that which we trust? The answers are clear if you have a moral sense. Good is magnetically attracted to good. Bad pulls to bad.

Do most people understand that their every decision leads to some inevitable next decision? If you make the choice to do something wrong then you should know that there are consequences. (they used to use the word 'sin' to say 'do something wrong', but that was linked to 'Hell' and other mythologies, and created a whole mythology of Heaven and Hell, most of which was just made up in people's heads, which is not claiming that it doesn't exist, but that it didn't have to exist. People made it up and then it existed and it couldn't have existed before that.) So if someone were a sick person who does twisted things to innocents then either they would have a sense of remorse and a moral coming back, or they would just continue without regard for others and for the culture around them. At that time someone else has to stop them.

We can look for analogies about this topic in other fields of human endeavor. Some fields claim all importance, preeminence, ruler-ship. But we all know that these virtues are of all, and they can not be claimed, but must just be manifested through good and virtuous civic behavior that respects all of the citizens and is not out on a tare to destroy some imagined political opposition.

The governance of people proceeds as the people want to be governed by the ones in charge. If egregiousness of excessive ridiculousness (people devolving into Kafka-play roles) lands on the shoulder of someone who is supposed to be an officer of the bureaucracy, and that person imagines some higher importance, even if they have a clamp down on everything and everyone, and know all, people just aren't going to put up with the procession of dominance. The one who thinks that they are the master is the biggest slave of all, and will be the most humiliated when the whole sick charade is exposed, the sides of the tent that they are in, with their twisted ways, suddenly fall to the ground, so hide the eyes of the children. Yes, please hide the eyes.

"Look mommy, the Emperor has no clothes"

"Yes, but the guy from Crude-tumber-canyon . . . has a . . . oh, cover your eyes. Cover your eyes!"

And so the sick psycho play was over and all the cartoon ants had to go home and shower-off. It was a sad day for them, too, because they realized that they could no longer cash out every Friday and saunter off to the Malls and Golf courses. They would have to eke their ways alone, through the berry wastes of the foggy-bottoms. But they don't have any of those in Canyon land so maybe they all have to move to Reno. And maybe they'll have a friend who has a chalet, (or access to a chalet) up there in the glorious Sierra, and they can yum it up with ex-child-stars (also cartoon elfs) and other pseudo-notables of the long ago.

"Yes, I used to work in the toon-shop, next to the mind-factory, near the fallacy farm, down the block from the stripe-club (called that because it is on 'the stripe?'). Club Stripe.

Club Stripe closes. They start to tear down a building. It collapses. News was the other day.

Sad ness. Sad ness at the end of the episode. Suddenly a gaint knife rips through the montage like it is a cheep art-deco-nationalist poster from the 1930's (with vibrant hallucinatory inks that reach out and lick you).

Suddenly the cell phone had a tongue sticking out of it and it was trying to lick Effortous.

"Back to your cage." he says, clicking it shut. "

"I'm never really off." twiddles the phone. It is making kissy-face sounds.

Change Your Own Mind

Instead of trying to change the mind of your readers for some fowl paid-for message, and being a shill, change your own mind and don't do that.

Sept 19, 2016

In your ruby crystal dreaming
you see the whole world as red
you see it all
like the cardinals call
to bring you to the happy place
with free rent.

In you saphire crysatl dreaming
you see the whole world
as sad and depressed,
bluer than blue, but
minor chord blues
and the sound of sad weeping
isn't you
isn't you
isn't you

And a minor key
is how you used to feel
you can change the mood
so fast
just step it up
to the major key
and suck it up
just suck it up, whatever bad that's happened.

If you could be
a happy man
you'd be dancing
on the emerald sand
where it's always Spring
and all are romancing
Cher-che le femme, don't you know
(but I don't speak French)

If you were an emerald dreamer
of the sea and the smell of home
how far would you go off
away from your love

Truck-u-later

in this column Truck-u-later steps in deeper . . .

If you don't want putrid behavior to be exposed through an illegal document dump: don't behave in a putrid manner and document it. Stop being imperious and clueless and self-entitled and start being of the people. Halt with the governance of the highest bidder ways. Be outraged by what the documents expose, not by the fact of those very documents.

The first question that we need to ask: when was your revolution usurped?

The second question: how are you just the person who 'they' want you to be. Remember that there is no real 'they'. It's all in your head, there, buckerinno.

Next question: what can you do that would actually help other people? How is what you are wanting to do not just a self-righteous act designed to appease your own inner 'they'? (who exist only in your mind, dear reader, always yelling out urges for you to bow to).

the constant change
 is kind-of the point . . .

change without continuity and tradition is often very hard to manage for those thrust into it. And thus the frame of things gives a place for the change to happen. If you violate that idea then you are coming up with something completely different and maybe no one will want to see your new idea, or use your great, new venue, because it's too far out, and very far away from what they currently care about. It's a nether or a meta and it's merely for a lark? Or does it become the next big thing? As fun as graphics are (CGI) and animation, and making a world to fly around in (like minetest, which is easy when you learn how) ultimately such a meta is a hollow place. It's a distraction during the season of gaming. It allows one to brush up on geometry and math, and architectural design, it gives people training in computer languages, it allows someone to make some graphical ideas, and pass a few hours of time every few days or so . . .

To live within such a realm really isn't possible.

Poem Shards

just who reads, who writes these poems?
off a mountain road the poet roams
but only in a poem.

Realizing that the empty
is empty
and not needing anything there.

just who shows up and for what?
I'm lonely or am alone or what does it matter?
driving off towards the nothing
walking along the nowhere path
up high
sure, it's a pretty view
but seen it, done it, jaded, back to the air port
he flew
his fantasy of happy vacation was through.

The deep snow.

The deep snow. She doesn't know how deep. She didn't think about it. Depth of snow no one know in rills and hollows where you shouldn't go when the storm is fierce and the night is cold even you shouldn't be so bold. poem is from 2012 short story titled Blizzard Baby The morning light is hued in cold awareness. Warming in the sun the bunny explores the snow covered lawn. The tracks melt by mid morning. Bunny doesn't know what the song means, anyway. This giant bubble that we call awareness? Coders Edge

served to you by:

Fedora Core 38 beta

Ya, I decided to load Fedora Core 38 Beta about a month ago, and this machine kept shutting down . . . I think I finally fixed it. Tomorrow is the big release day for the Fedora Core 38. My production workstation is still running FC37. I don't know if I'll jump right on it right away. . .

my server is still resetting, or maybe I have it fixed. I decided to just remove plasma-desktop, as I don't use it. The journals were giving all kinds of errors with that, and I think that might have been the issue, conflicting with the gdm that I do use. Worst case I'd just go to runlevel 3 but, as I said in another column, I don't really even know if anyone views these pages anyway.

My production box would upgrade but the dnf says it would downgrade grum and associated tools, and that's never a good thing to do. I'm just not going to do it! anyway I'll check tomorrow when the offical release is and probably do it then. If I'm in the mood.

So now I've run every version of Fedora serving this website! that's a long time.

here is from a year ago:

Fedora Core 36 beta

It took some time to figure out how to defeat the new screensaver built in, but I was able to. It's the biggest downside to the new Gnome.

I set the keybindings to something I don't use, and then put in a custom keybinding to use the old tool.

There are other minor things that annoy too, like the restoration of a deleted file that I always have to delete again on every FC core upgrade. The file is name camera-shutte.oga. It's in /usr/share/sounds/freedesktop/stereo

At the precipice of coding.

a mountain trail often has a place with a great view and a perilous fall if you wonder just a bit too far to one side of the trail. It's called a precipice. It's not a scary place. It's a safe place that one passes through.

OK, so I've done an update to FC34.

the biggest issue was . . . . drum roll . . .a lock up of gnome.

and if i clicked on the activities button I would need to reload (log out log back in).

I was able to run stuff without that, and thus determined a list of files that might need to be removed. I did as full reinstall of gnome as such:

dnf reinstall gnome

then I did a

dnf list installed |grep fc33

which gave me a list of files to consider uninstalling.

from that I got the following:

first odd issue:

sudo was not at first working! I had to install it! I kept the configuration file so I have my preferences still set up.

dnf install sudo dnf reinstall gnome-* dnf reinstall kde* dnf reinstall NetworkManager* dnf remove gnome-screensaver dnf remove gnome-shell-extension-desktop-icons-20.04.0-2.fc33.noarch dnf remove xorg-x11-xkb-extras-7.7-33.fc33.x86_64 dnf remove compat-openssl10-1:1.0.2o-11.fc33.x86_64 dnf remove mozjs60-60.9.0-7.fc33.x86_64

there are still some fc33 packages, (I also looked for fc32 packages, anything older that was gnome)

sudo dnf list installed |grep fc33
biber.noarch 2.14-4.fc33 @fedora
gamin.x86_64 0.1.10-37.fc33 @fedora
libgta.x86_64 1.0.9-5.fc33 @fedora

if removing a package also removed large numbers of other packages, I left it. For each of the few that I did remove, I always would make sure by reading what would happen before agreeing to the transaction.

now the gnome-shell is working and it doesn't lock up. So which of the packages that I removed made the difference? I am not sure.

and so after just a few short hours of install, I've got my system working in away that seems normal.

the new gnome shell moves the icons to the bottom of the screen.

I find gnome-shell to be annoyingly poppy at times. I tend to do things rapidly, and all the popping can be nauseating.

It is helpful to learn how to use dnf. I've found that the reverse history stuff works as long as you haven't made too many changes. It's a dicey, though, to try and go back to an older revision but I did it ONCE. Next time it didn't work out so well. AT that point it was installing dnf and yum from rpms.

and I had success. It's the kind of thing that when you know how to do it . . .

but there was one other trick that I needed and it was a scary way to reset a password and I did discover how to do it. I'm not sharing that one (barely remember) it's like these things exist in a nether, and it's best to . . . let the knowledge fade unless you need it. It's too scary to dwell in that space.

anyway, gnome shell is working. It's not flighty and hanging up. And all it took was to remove the old packages of gnome that might conflict with it. And now I can continue with my review.
